  • overclocker Der8auer has gotten his hands on an 18-core Skylake-X processor and delidded it using a special tool he designed called the Delid-Die-Mate X

    • The tool will eventually be for sale

  • It looks like this chip sample doesn't use a solder TIM but some easy to clean off paste.

  • The die is huge. All of the upcoming 12 to 18 core Skylake-X SKUs will have this same physical die size

  • The die and surface transistors around the die look untouched by the delidding process

iPhone 8 costs higher due to Samsung controlling OLED, no touch ID due to 3D Touch

https://9to5mac.com/2017/09/06/kgi-iphone-oled-samsung-touch-id/

  • The new iPhone’s display is expected to include a flexible OLED panel, an OLED touch panel, a 3D Touch module, and an OLED panel module.

  • BUT Samsung will be responsible for providing each OLED part- with the only exception in the stack being the 3D Touch module.

  • Normally, Apple leverages multiple supplies, keeping costs lower and ensuring enough supply. This time, Samsung is the only supplier.

  • The OLED unit is estimated to cost $120-$130 per screen versus the $45-$55 unit cost of LCD panels.

  • This could explain the expected price tag of around $1,000

  • ALSO While Apple was originally aiming to embed Touch ID under the display this is rumoured to be cancelled since OLED creates an unfavorable scan-through performance for the fingerprint sensor.

  • In place of Touch ID Apple is expected to rely on facial recognition features and old school typed passwords on the new high end iPhone.

    • the Core i3-6098P,

    • Core i5-6402P,

    • Core i5-6600K, and

    • Core i7-6700K.

  • Intel will be taking orders for these chips through March 30 of 2018 and shipping them through to September 2018.

  • It's possible Intel is discontinuing these Skylake models to keep them from taking up fab space that could be used for many-core Skylake-X processors and other 14nm+ products

AI has better Gaydar than you

Source 1: https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/08/a-i-can-detect-the-sexual-orientation-of-a-person-based-on-one-photo-research-shows.html

  • Artificial Intelligence can now accurately identify a person's sexual orientation by analyzing photos of their face, according to new research conducted at Stanford

  • From ONE photo The machine intelligence could correctly infer between gay and straight men 81% of the time, and 74% of the time for women.

  • In contrast, human judges correctly identified the orientation of men 61% of the time and  54% of the time for women.

  • When the AI reviewed five images of a person's face the results were even more convincing – 91% accurate for men and 83% for women.

  • The researchers suggest the software was able to find subtle differences in facial structure between gay and straight people

    • gay men and women typically had "gender-atypical" features and expressions.

    • A person's "grooming style" also factored into the algorithm, essentially suggesting gay women appeared more masculine and vice versa.

  • The researchers behind the study argued that with the appropriate data sets, similar AI tests could spot other personal traits such as an individual's IQ or even their political views.

  • The research has prompted critics to question whether the technology could be used to violate a person's privacy.

Whatsapp Finally Monetizing

Source 1: https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/08/whatsapp-ads/

  • This week WhatsApp announced its plan to eventually charge businesses, stirring worries that businesses might be able to cold-message users with sponsored message ads.

  • Now, code in Facebook’s ad manager has been found that lets businesses buy ads with a “Send WhatsApp Message” button built in.

  • For now, WhatsApp isn’t selling ads on its own app, but testing a WhatsApp chat button on Facebook ads that directly opens a conversation with a business in WhatsApp.

    • Facebook: “We’re testing a new way for people to start a chat with a business in WhatsApp from a Facebook ad. This makes it easier for people to connect with businesses that they care about on WhatsApp.”

  • Businesses will only be able to contact WhatsApp users that have agreed to be messaged by initiating the conversation.

  • Sponsored messages work the same way on Facebook Messenger: businesses can pay to reconnect with people they’re already chatting with.

  • WhatsApp initially promised not to show ads when it was acquired by Facebook for $19 billion in 2014.

Kalashnikov Unveils New Anti-Drone Weapon

Source 2: VIDEO https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=ffOZMTVeM70

  • Russian arms manufacturer Kalashnikov, makers of the AK series, has developed an advanced anti-drone gun called the REX-1.

  • “This radiomagnetic ‘gun’ suppresses the command and control channels of the world’s most commonly encountered drones.

  • It’s equipped with a number of interchangeable electromagnetic and infrared units that suppress GSM, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and other channels, rendering drones inoperable

    • It’s possible to change each component in a matter of seconds, just like changing the magazine on an assault rifle.

    • Once disrupted, most drones will automatically either return to their start point or land where they are.

  • Due to its ability to block phone signals, REX-1 can also be used to prevent remote detonation of improvised explosives

  • REX-1 is able to “fire” continuously for four hours. It can then be recharged for four hours using an ordinary 220-volt socket, or it can be connected to an additional battery for uninterrupted use.

  • A civilian version of the weapon with stripped-down features could possibly come to market, at an estimated price of $5,000

Microsoft extends Windows 10 S upgrade timeline

Source 1: https://betanews.com/2017/09/05/windows-10-s-weakness-extend/

  • Microsoft has announced that they’re extending the ability to switch from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro for free by 3 months. The offer now extends until March 31, 2018

  • The idea of Windows 10 S is to limit the user to applications from the Windows Store,

  • This could make users safer by limiting the potential of malware since users can't download and install questionable things from the web.

  • But the plan only works if there is a good library of apps, and and right now there is not.

Video Ideas:

1. Designing the Ultimate HTPC/VR Living Room PC CASE, come up with a design for a case that would sit horizontal, like what the Shift/Shift X can do and supports at a minimum a FULL ATX Motherboard and a 240mm Rad, maybe even a single optical drive bay on the side so you can put a 4k Bluray drive in it, you could model the pieces out and print them on the 3D printer and design something that isn't just a square box with little cooling support like the Node series. Maybe a few designs, or put them out to the community to come up with concepts, have the top 5 3d printed and make a video on them then find a case manufacture open to input from the community and get the design sold to them, kinda like that limited run headphone stand thing you did last year (probably not practical considering the costs of custom one off computer towers, but if popular enough maybe something that could see a production run made).

2. In the Wall PC, like literally design a box (like the desk PC) that would fit between 2 studs that houses the computer components with the outputs feeding to the wallpaper TV from LG, you would cover the front of it in glass, so the PC is like a picture hung on the wall (or you could mount a touchscreen in front of it that controls the PC), but it goes into the wall, for ventilation put an intake vent down by the floor and an exhaust vent up high in the wall, with maybe some fans at each location to push air through.

3. Seeing how much it would cost to build a PC to match the performance of the Xbox One X, you've done many "console killers", but they have all been super expensive and only a "console killer" because of the similar sized cases, legitimately how much would you have to spend on the launch day of the One X to build a PC that gamed at the same FPS and resolution, kinda like you did years ago in the house with that gaming PC that beat out the Xbox and PS4 (I think it was PS4) for like the same cost as the console and remember to add in that 4k UHD bluray drive from before, because half the point of a console is the disc playback support, if for no other reason then to see just how good a deal (in terms of FPS for the dollar) is the new console, we all know PC is always better because of how much more you can do with them and how much cheaper you can get games for and no online subscription fees.

4. (New Series, extension of the "Workshop videos" called "HARDWARE MASH") Episode #1 DIY BACKLIT Wireless Keyboard, to hell with the battery life, once you go backlit going back to non-backlit sucks, but some of us crazy people want both backlit and wireless for our living room HTPC/VR rigs, like come up with someway to mash 2 Corsair or Logitech keyboards together so you put the wireless tech of one into the backlit wired model (assuming it's even possible, like if the backlight controller is on a separate board in the keyboard then the board for the wireless, maybe the could be wired together, like start with that 1 keyboard you used a while back where it can be wired or wireless and transplant that into a similar model backlit wired one (have to check with keyboard makers to see if that could even work).

5. "Smart Home" Automation devices reviews, like I got a switch for my porch light so I can turn it on with my smart phone, this switch connected directly to my wifi router but others use like Z-wave stuff and there is a whole other one out there at the consumer level, which is most user friendly and reliable. in another video get Samsung to lend you one of those stupid overpriced fridges with the giant touchscreen on the door, Video title "This Fridge Cost more then MY CAR" and it would be the truth.

6. The Ultimate Video Conversion Rig (precursor to the ultimate HTPC video), do some tests and try to figure out what would be a good hardware setup for someone that wants to rip there DVD/Bluray collection down to PC then Encode in HEVC/h.265/x.265 to save significant file storage requirements (hard drive capacity) but doesn't take 3 times longer then it takes to watch it to do it, like what hardware and software is best suited for that (like MakeMKV rips the video then Handbrake to reencode or something else, maybe and what settings can you not see the difference between the bluray and HEVC compressed file on something like that fancy LG Wallpaper TV).

Thank you! You're comment on NASA innovation and connecting it to real world practicality was fantastic. Combined with the earlier Elon commentary I was chatting with my monitor saying "Exactly! You get it! Yes!!!!". Maybe a video on real world applications of engineering competitions of the past, NASA might be really exciting.

Thanks guys!

You could always do videos explaining the more basic stuff to regular consumers, how to use bios, what is unraid, raid0, raid1, overclocking, tell us what parts we should be buying for running the newest games without going over the top

BIOS settings get different names from different manufactures and what you need to know depends on what you are trying to do, explaining what every setting in the advanced menu of a modern UEFI BIOS would be pretty boring for a video and a LONG video, just refer to your manual. pretty sure they've covered unraid, raid and overclocking, although overclocking depends on the chip generation in how you do it, as far as what to get for gaming, at MOST, 7700k and 1080ti, anything more then that for JUST GAMING is pointless, Ryzen 7 if you want to stream and game from the same machine, but you will take a sizable hit in FPS, then there is the factor of resolution, like if you are playing at 1080p a 7700k and 1080ti is stupid overkill on pretty much anything.

People just want videos that seem worth the effort of the 20 (or however many you have) people on your staff now.

I'm surprised you chose to single out the Hyperloop video, when I personally think the painting over the RGB video was the worst this week (I really enjoyed the hyperloop one). I know it has the most views so far this week for some reason, so you'll probably have no incentive to change, but it was literally just a video of someone painting a PC which destroyed it. I try not to think of the number of hours someone spent hand painting it...

My thoughts on Linus and Luke's criticisms or their criticisms:

-The entire hyperloop project is still tied to Elon Musk. This is a guy who promises a lot, delivers on some. Yes, Elon got somewhere with Tesla on taxpayer's dime and getting this far is very impressive... but the fact that we had to pay for it for this company to remain unprofitable is still something. Yes, Elon did land rockets back down, but his failure rates were/are still pretty high (something like the Facebook rocket blowing up had nothing to do with the landing). It's not like satellites were not being sent into space before he came along and that's why we never heard about rockets exploding. It's because other companies got it right.

Elon is a guy who either exaggerates or has strong opinions depending on who you ask, and probably a mix of both. His cult of personality is something like Steve Jobs because it has some sort of reality distortion field around him and his products. I have a coworker who thinks Tesla is going to take over the world, so he recommended me to buy Tesla stock more than once. Maybe they will, but I don't think he's aware of the financials and other less pretty aspects of the company. Or how Tesla will stand to make a profit from these low budget cars, or how there will be enough lithium for his electric car revolution. Things like Tesla's self driving car DLC or probably crazy dashboard on the Model 3 should give people pause.

My convoluted point being, Elon has a cult of personality. News headlines LOVE to talk about sensationalist stuff and skip the caveats. There are subreddits like r/Futurology where people keep shouting about how the latest breakthrough will fix everything. It probably won't. Luke, you say you have a science background. Then you should know that science is a graveyard of dead ideas. We always have to be realistic about the challenges of doing things nobody else could ever manage to do and the probability of success. When the media constantly hype things and nothing ever comes of it, people will lose trust in the media... or worse, in science. This is what I think some of the people yelling about 'HYPERLOOP IS FAKE NEWS' actually meant.

I don't actually think the world needs more people who want to prove other people wrong by doing things other people said can't be done. I think the world needs to be more realistic about the difficulty of good science, so they should be reminded of that.

-Linus: You keep talking about how there's nothing to review. You talked about how you would be bored to death covering many items people want you to review. Obviously you speak the truth there, that's your opinion about your own interests and temperament. But saying there's nothing to review I think is just wrong. The fact of the matter is people still ask questions all the time in forums like LTT over and over again because there isn't enough good information out there. Even if there is, there isn't anybody to sort through the crap. My opinion is that as a reviewer and a tech Youtuber it's literally YOUR JOB to FIND things to talk about by finding things people fail to think about when purchasing items.

Let's talk about motherboard reviews since that was the example in this week's show. You can check DPC latency, post times, and various ways to improve post times (disabling uefi stuff that's not needed and secure boot). You can measure the audio performance of the onboard audio. You could note that a codec is just a codec. An audio chip is just a chip. The way it's implemented means a lot too. I've seen people do RMAA testing but nobody has done something arguably more important, which is testing of the output impedance. Or even just how much voltage/power the dang thing can output. If you can be the one tech Youtuber that cuts through the mystical audio bullcrap and actually do the tests where it counts? Then you'll gain several levels of respect in my eyes. Or, the intriguing new trend of having less dimm slots to improve maximum ram overclocking. Gimmick or not? How much benefit does it really give us? This is not my job. I don't spend that much time thinking about this but I could already come up with all these things.

You post half baked reviews like the embarrassing delidding video where you found no difference or the original 'ram speed doesn't matter' video. Meanwhile der8auer's out there trying to delid Threadripper because he can, and delidding soldered 1800x because he can and doing testing on that. Let's be honest Linus, the way you are perceived by a lot of people is you do ridiculous things for fun/attention/money but you're light on actual serious tech content. Which is fine if that's the audience you want to attract and the content you want to do, but I understand why people are upset. And the dumb thumbnails or titles are just concrete things people can point to instead of abstract things like having a different focus, which is why people lash out.

You are going around plastidipping PCs when there's actual real stuff that still needs to be tested. There's an opportunity cost here that just hits me in the nuts every time I see a video like that. You have a giant team but I don't think the information has gotten better. The fact that your automatic approach for improving the WAN show is to buy better gear just highlights the problem. I don't sub for good gear, all flash and no substance. I sub to be educated, and that involves reviewing topics before covering them on the WAN show. Yeah, I know WAN show was never a super serious thing for you guys, but it's the show that got me to pay attention to the channel and to ultimately sub. And sadly now I have unsubbed. (I still come back weekly for the WAN shows and only the WAN shows.)

Not to say that all criticisms of you are valid of course. But I think some of it is pretty damned valid, despite the fact that listening to you and Luke talk it's as if your detractors are all morons. If doing dumb things like '10 Gamers 1 PC' or plastidipping pcs is what you want to do, so be it. It's your time, your money, your channel. But then our criticisms stand.

I don't think all of my detractors are idiots. Most of them just seem to either be idiots or doing a damn fine job of trying to convince me they are.

But I don't think you are. There are some fair points here to consider, and some I already have and won't change.

Can't say much more (on my phone) but just letting you know I read your post :)

Hello Linus, I have a nasty habit where I type, post, then edit the post slowly over the course of the next 30 minutes. I actually somewhat edited that line about making detractors look like idiots... I think it's better to say that 'it makes a bystander think all of your detractors are like idiots'. What I originally said makes it look like you actually mean to say all of your detractors look like idiots, which I know is not the case. Let's just say, now I will stop editing my post. :D A refresh may be in order though.

I know some points you have addressed in the past, but I mentioned them anyways... Sort of to put it out there.

(Also... I look to places like Gamer's Nexus, which alerted me to the fact that Gigabyte's 1080ti had a few phases quadrupled, and did air cooler testing across different cards. Buildzoid from Actually Hardcore Overclocking's claim to fame as you probably know is looking at motherboard VRMs. As a single thread perf junkie playing modded Skyrim and Fallout I am being told constantly that people like use probably don't exist, yet we continue to try to find higher and higher single thread perf because we can. Binned chips, delidded chips, heavily overclocked ram. Higher bandwidth or lower latency ram? Quad channel or dual channel? There is still unexplored territory.)

wouldn't mind a PROPER revisit of these videos where you actually test the delidded 6700k OVERCLOCKED with liquid metal from a GOOD BRAND and not just replace toothpaste with slightly better toothpaste then show a real world testing of that with an AIO, not a crappy stock heatsink, if you aren't pushing the thermal limits like you wheren't when running at stock you aren't going to see the true delta, I say this simply because the the HUGE temperature delta's we see from so many online when you didn't get like any notable change, we need to push the limits to verify which methods are correct, yours or all those other people, you already have the 6700k, all you need is a 20 dollar tube of liquid metal to go between the IHS and Die.

A revisit is good. Now with a delidding tool delidding is pretty safe. The razor method now seems so archaic. Linus did revisit the 'does ram speed matter in gaming?' question with a more recent video some months ago that was closer to the mark. It still did not go anywhere near the depth I wanted, but still quite a bit better than the original.

Of course, we know how a revisit of the delidding video would turn out. But even then I think there are some nuances there that can be teased out: Which delidding tool is best? A history of delidding and various methods and how they worked or failed to work. Why do we use liquid metal under IHS and usually not over IHS? What is 'liquid metal' and why are its constituents the way they are? Was it ever really the "gap under the IHS" causing the thermal problems or just the paste, or a combination of both? Should we ever care about the thermal conductivity rating listed on the box? What really is the benefit of having lower temperatures anyways? (Does it allow CPU to accept more voltage? Do more with less current?)

...etc

Side note:

Having spent a brief time under intense public scrutiny for an event I won't detail, I've been on the other side of the discussion where I was the one being criticized... sometimes fairly, often unfairly and by people who don't know me. So @LinusTech, I do to some extent understand that it's tiring to have to deal with criticism all the time. Hell, even totally valid criticism is just a pain in the ass. But, I'll let my word choice stand... they do reflect what I truly think.

So most of the hyperloop hatred probably comes from things like solar roadways or the artificial gill stuff. It's hyped up and spread across a bunch of news sites/the internet. When the concept really isn't going to work in reality, and it just ends up wasting a good amount of time/money. That could probably be better spent elsewhere, though at least the hyperloop is privately funded.

Though someone mentioned a lot of those points earlier*
