MCMC Blocks Entire Steam Store Following God Fighting Game Controversy

genexis_x

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken the unprecedented move of denying access to the entire Steam store, following the discovery of a controversial fighting game involving religious deities.

Quote

It appears that the MCMC has deployed a DNS block to the store.steampowered.com domain, affecting all Malaysians using the TM DNS. Some users trying to access the store on Digi and Maxis have also reported being denied access. (TM-Telekom Malaysia, national telco in Malaysia; Digi, Maxis - mobile service providers)

This block may have been the result of a game available on Steam’s Early Access platform called Fight of Gods. It features religious deities such as Odin, Amaterasu, Moses, and Guan Gong in an arcade-style fighting game, but it was the recent additions of characters such as Jesus and Gautama Buddha that raised the eyebrows of the authorities. Fan requests for the Prophet Muhammad to be added in added fuel to the fire.

Earlier today, it was reported that the MCMC has contacted Valve and requested that Fight of Gods be geoblocked for Malaysians within the next 24 hours, or risk further action being taken. This DNS block appears to be that action, although it must be said that it’s a rather crude one, as it denies Malaysians from buying any game on the platform.

That said, you still can play games on Steam; only the store has been blocked.

Nevertheless, the DNS block can be circumvented by switching to Google DNS. On Windows, this is fairly easily done.

Frankly, I'd just rather no religious preference rather than secular. Secular governments can introduce a lot of bullshit to discourage one from religion, and when a government does not and won't particularly take a stance on religion, that's a win/win for everyone.

is not secular, but more like "atheism as official religion" or something like that.

Kinda thought secularism was leaning more towards discouraging religion, kinda like, frankly, North Korea. Extreme example but it's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

1) Secularism is no religious preference from the government and it's institutions

2) Those measures you call BS are actually there to counter balance the far bigger BS from religious people that want to use their faith to do shit like discriminate others like LGBTQ+ people or other less populous religious people from different faiths. You wouldn't need the heavy handed regulations if Jesus freaks weren't hell bent on pushing down Christian dogma in public schools or use religion to obtain political power.

So I'm sorry but what you say only works from the point of view or someone who's already pretty non-religious or lives in a fairly secular society already. For places where it's literally illegal to just be who you are if you're gay, yeah very heavy handed restrictions are needed to guarantee equal rights to all.

Governments should not have a religion.

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.

"Secular" is actually the best term for what you described ;) It basically means "non-religious", not based on religion. For example, Gregorian chant or Gospel are religious music, everything not meant to be played in religious ceremonies qualifies as "secular music" (we are not used to referred to it like that these days, but it kind of mattered in the middle ages :P). Another example: a volunteer to Caritas who is not affiliated to the Catholic Church (i.e., it's not a priest, etc) would be a "secular member", as opposed to I guess an "ordered" member, or something like that.

1. as above, already kinda came to that conclusion with someone else

2. Religion was never shoved down my throat as far back as I remember in public schools (whether that was the case with my parents is a different story). Hell, now that I'm in high school, I meet more edgy idiots who hate religion than vice versa. Maybe I'm not answering your question correctly but I guess my point is that this goes both ways: you have a lot of heavily religious people and you have a lot of heavily anti-religion people. Both of which get grating really fast.

I try to stay away from religion, not because I don't like it but because I have many, many, many questions for both aisles as to what purpose their ideology serves. I guess the best way to describe me would be an agnostic Christian or an agnostic atheist. Meh.

This also might be malicious compliance on the part of the ISPs.  Doing what they are told so they don't get in trouble, but knowing full well it's like locking a door that has no walls around it.

2. As I told you: this is a result of you living in a mostly secular society. We literally had to have a civil war to strip the clergy of their incredible wealth and direct political power. There's many places in the world where religion, state and judiciary are one and the same and dictate your lives in according to the Quran and Hadiths for example.

So I think you're failing to see things from a point of view that is living under an overwhelming, oppressive and directly confrontational majority of religious people with government backing which is why I brought up Secularism.

Again strip a statement out of context and put it on your extremely flawed personal experience and of course it looks as if edgy atheist neckbeards are just as bad but they just aren't: They're just a bit of a reactionary tiny movement to what's literally thousands of years of religious oppression.

kimak, one game does not go with their beliefs = shut down entire service

macam one big supermarket outlet sell porn magazines or something, shut down the entire company's chain of supermarkets.

kimak: short for pukimak, means a vagina, but the word is commonly used as an interjection

macam: has the same meaning as like, as if, kind of like

Fun fact of the day: The Anglican Church in Sydney, Australia ALONE (just ONE of 7 states) lost 100 million AUD (around 85mil USD) during the GFC.. how fucking much do they have stacked up there?

The Vatican Bank has $8 BILLION dollars in assets. They found 1.2 billion euros off the balance sheets in the 2014-15 financial year, and that's just nothing to them. The US Catholic Church ALONE spent $170b on churches, parishes and schools in ONE YEAR (2010).

Yet why is this NOT TAXED? 'muh religion, muh thinking' In fact, many governments give them money.

This is why we need to separate Government and Religion. Leave your fuckin thoughts about the guy in the sky at home, where it belongs.

Try saying what you just wrote in a sunday gathering, you will know what true living horror means in the form of persuasive discussions with the many followers.

No, it should not be. That kind of thinking is terrible and only leads to problems. People should be allowed to worship all they want, as long as it does not harm anyone and they respect the law and other people's rights. Most religious people couldn't give less of a shit about other religions or non-religious people. You should never desire to strip away freedoms from people unless there is actual, serious, harm being done. However, we do need to stop making excuses for people just because they follow one religion or another.

2 things,

1) I did not say outlaw religion, I said outlaw practicing religion. People can believe what they like, they just shouldn't be allowed to force their beliefs onto everyone else.

2) Religion is, and always has, been responsible for far more harm and wrong doing in the world than its ever done good. Literally billions of people have been slaughtered in the name of whichever god the perpetrators used to justify their actions, wars, famine, physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse (and yes even pedophilia) have all been actioned against innocent believers in the name of god. Religion has done countless and untold damage to the world and anybody who suggests otherwise is naive.

Religion was invented by the powerful as a method of controlling the mass population using scare tactics, it has NO reason to still be a thing in this day in age when we have a decent moral code, ethics and a society governed by law and order.

I'm not secular, I'm not atheist, I am a scientists and I believe that religion has no place in the modern world and if it disappeared tomorrow the world would be a much better place.

If it wasn't for religion people would fight and kill each other for other reasons. You're putting blame on something that is simply part of human nature. We are violent animals that have, throughout history, reveled in our ability to cause harm to one-another for no reason. Religion is simply a convenient excuse for people to harm others. We have always hated people that are "different" then us. Whether it was skin color, language, culture, religion, whatever. It is all an excuse to disguise that we fought and killed people simply because they were not "us".

I am not fond of organized religion as it stand now, they are all massively corrupt organizations, but I believe in the right of people to practice religion.

here in Australia the high court gave the ISPs the job to block piratebay and some other sites, hilariously just changing to Google DNS works.

yet, thousands of phishing sites, scams, ponzi schemes, and other suspicious organisations remain unblocked. thanks government, for putting the private organisations first and people second..
