Well , which cooler do you suggest ? AMP! ? Or Evga ?

In descending order of performance:

  • Lightning
  • Jetstream
  • Phoenix
  • Gaming 6G
  • Matrix

Matrix is to loud at stock but runs cools so you can dial back the fans peed. The ACX is to loud, the AMP so we'll built but takes to much power and is loud. IDK if you could undervolt it do run cool. I would try it if I own one but I don't. Inno3D has built the VRM roaster, Strix is loud and Classified is obnoxiously loud. Source is the German hardware magazine PCGH - PCGames Hardware, volume 2015/9 and 2015/2 or the overview in the back you can seen in all following volumes before the 1080 released.

Hey guys,

I have a deal on gtx 980 ti for 411 USD used. New gtx 1070 costs 525 USD.

I'm here wondering, which one should i go with ?

(I'm from Czech Republic, so these prices are pretty much normal or slightly less than normal.

get the 980Ti. performance is so close, and that price difference really is big!

i had a ASUS 980Ti on watercooling that pulled ahead of some founders edition 1070's when overclocked ;)

I know that in some cases 980 Ti outperforms 1070, i will definitely have something on air though, maybe Strix or G1 Gaming models.

Question really is, if its worth to invest in something that is generation old or buy a 10-series GPU.?

Personally I would go with the new 1070 - 2GB more VRAM and its new, latest generation.

The 980ti is still a great card of course, and out performs the 1070 in some situations, but it does use more power.

Do the game you play make use of any software improvements that come with the 10-series? I tend to upgrade when a significant Direct X or opengl twists my arm. I dont think the 10-series nvidia has this. I doubt it but i might be wrong.

The 980 To will be hotter/louder and at best just as fast. I would get the 1070 since it is also new and covered by warranty.

Someone suggested the G1 in here. Stay away from.it. The cooler is absolut trash.

Power is not and issue, still have Cooler Master G550M PSU, which i think is not bad.

Only gaming, sometimes video rendering or editing, but not much. Sometimes virtualization, but that is not gpu intensive at all.

Go for 1070 lower power needed , better temperatures then 980 ti , a little bit better performance

I will see, if the cost of 1070 rise up again i will go with 980 Ti.

But Thanks for the opinion.

@Roman848 keep in mind the VRAM, I play in 1440p at 1.25 resolution scale and in some of my PC games (Squad) I can use around 10GB VRAM.

If your playing and staying at 1080p then it's a non issue but you may find the 6gB VRAM becomes an issue at higher resolutions and settings, App dependant.

I got my 1080ti mostly for the VRAM as I do alot of VR stuff as well.

Yeah , i have basic 1080p 60HZ panel, so i'm aiming for 60 fps at best, which 1070 and 980 ti can do on 1440p no problem. Biggest issue is the price difference. 110 USD is a big difference in my opinion.

Go the 1070 because on air cooling this makes much, much more sense.

I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up on tape somewhere.

The 960 idea how much power? 120 watts?

Objectively the cooler is cheap trash. Just look at a tear down. 2 heatpipes are not enough for 250W 1080s or 200W 1070s.

On air ? If i'm going for a beefy cooler with 3 fans, how much sense is making 980 ti now ? Talking about the Strix Cooler for 980 Ti, not the new one , but the older.

Well.... Performance of those 2 cards don't differ even when overclocked so...

If electricity is a problem in your area, definitely avoid the 980 Ti.

The other thing is to work out whether you want that warranty.

A 980Ti is a bit faster than a 1070 once both are overclocked ;) My 980Ti after an OC scores almost the score of a Founder's Edition GTX 1080.

But it is indeed more power-hungry and hotter so keep that in mind. For 1080p, VRAM doesn't matter whether it's 6GB or 8GB atm.

I your staying at 1080p and saving cash, what does a new 1060 3GB or 6GB card cost. That would be my choice if it's significantly cheaper.

I doubt a used card has as much warranty coverage(time) as a brand new one

Yeah yeah, i was thinking same. And will definitely go for it, if my budget wont be so high. I Always say to myself, if the product isnt at least twice as fast, its not worth for upgrade. And 1060 is not twice as fast as 960, but 980 ti or 1070 is. Consider that i was upgrading from 750 Ti to 960.

980 Ti Strix was not to good. 980 was great, best in class but 980 Ti not so much.

Edit: autocorrect makes Ti-To
