Posted September 3, 2017 I've used it on my Laptop a bit and Desktop. Complaints are that it doesn't feel super duper polished. Runs badly if you don't have an SSD, it has an old linux kernel installed and frankly the software center they include is nasty. But otherwise it's fine. If somebody were able to make Ubuntu look like Elementary without all the problems of Elementary then I'd use that instead. Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it. Posted September 3, 2017 I love it for the most part given how early it is in its life, but the older kernel and lack of minimize/maximize buttons is kinda infuriating. As a Linux noob I like the look of the GUI, but the general usability is not very cohesive. Have you tried the HWE kernel? You can get version 4.10 (HWE) or 4.11 (HWE Edge) of the Linux kernel in Ubuntu 16.04 now. I know Elementary is based on 16.04, so it should have access to those packages.

I've never bothered to update the kernel because nothing I've done required it, but it's just kinda odd that even though its the latest release it doesn't have the latest kernel (at least as far as I'm aware it still doesn't). Posted September 4, 2017 i think they are ripping off designs of other companies. I think there is no productivity gain by the user with their desktop. If they are not doing anything new then what is the point? ☼ ψ ︿_____︿_ψ_

HWE is based on whatever version of the kernel regular Ubuntu is using. 17.04 uses 4.10. I don't know what the deal with HWE Edge is though. Maybe it's the version just behind the current version for the sake of stability.
 Posted October 20, 2017 Currently Elementary is based on the kernel used by ubuntu 16.04 Yes you can manually add the pantheon desktop to ubuntu, there are even guides to it on google You can also use the gnome desktop and download extensions to acheive the same goal for instane the top bar look of elementary is called Dynamic Top bar And adding plank to ubuntu you can use your own themes However the reason I am using Elementary in my daily life is 1. I can fix most of the issues I have myself 2. I don't use download centers I install everything using the terminal 3. It's a stripped down version of Ubuntu(closer to debian actually) That last one is also why some people might run into some issues, cause not all the drivers that are included in ubuntu is included in ElementaryOS, but their respective repositories can be added using the terminal And you will be able to install them via the terminal as well
