  • Intel has announced a their new Xeon-W family of workstation-class processors, bridging the gap between servers and consumer processors with a direct replacement for the old E5-1600 series.

  • With the new Xeon-SP processors, the enterprise platform went up to Socket LGA3647 from the consumer LGA2066

    • With a complete division between consumer and enterprise, there was no way to bring features such as ECC and vPro down into more consumer friendly environments.

    • Xeon-W fixes this

  • They will require a new chipset, the C422 chipset, despite the common LGA2066 socket

    • Xeon-W will not work with the consumer X299 chipset

  • Xeon-W CPUs will feature:

    • 4 cores up to 18 cores,

    • up to 512GB of ECC RDIMM/LRDIMM memory,

    • dual 512-bit FMAs throughout the stack,

    • and peak turbo clocks of 4.5 GHz.

  • In essence, these are Xeon versions of the current Skylake-X (Core i9) processors with all the pro features enabled

    • extended memory support,

    • vPro,

    • Intel’s AMT,

    • and the standard enterprise Reliability, Serviceability and Availability (RAS) features.

  • The new chips will be marketed under the Intel 8th gen branding and will be featured on a new platform known as the 300-series.

    • The 300-series platform will mean that the chips will not be compatible with older 200-series platforms although the 300-series is known to feature the LGA 1151 socket

  • The Intel Core i7-8700K will be the flagship processor of the lineup and will feature:

    • 6 cores and 12 threads

    • be based on the 14nm process node.

      • 4.5 GHz (2 core)

      • 4.7 GHz (1 core)

    • The chip is fully unlocked

    • TDP of 95W.

    • 12 MB of L3 cache

    • a GT2 tier iGPU.

    • supports DDR4-2666 MHz clocked memory (native) and up to 4400 MHz+ (OC).

AMD losing 100+ dollars on every Vega 64 sold

Source 1: posted by Coaxialgamer https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/828865-amd-losing-100-dollars-on-every-vega-sold/

Source 2: http://fudzilla.com/news/graphics/44401-amd-is-losing-100-on-every-vega

  • Industry sources have confirmed that AMD loses at least $100 on every Vega 64 card it sells at its Suggested Etail Price of $499

  • The pricing of the HBM 2.0 memory, the packaging, and substrate cost are simply too high to have a sustainable price of $499

    • AMD is waiting for the second HBM 2 supplier to try to get a favorable HBM 2 price

    • Hynix is expected to start delivering its HBM 2 memory in October.

  • AMD is willing to take this loss in exchange for market share

  • Of course, no one is currently able to pay that low SEP price anyway...

Source 2:  https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/09/site-sells-instagram-users-phone-and-e-mail-details-10-a-search/

  • A queryable database of 6 million Instagram users’ email and phone numbers has been posted online.

  • The data is searchable for $10 per query

  • The person who carried this all out has contacted Ars:

    • "So far we've had 12 deposits totaling around $500," the site operator told Ars early Friday morning, about six hours after the service went live. "Not a horrible start."

  • the data seems to correspond to actual user accounts, and the personal info appears to match those accounts

  • An Instagram representative said late Thursday night that company officials are aware of the claim and are investigating it

  • The operator said he's sure other people have independently exploited the bug but doubts most were able to make their attacks scale the way his did.

  • About 12 hours after his mass exploit started, he said, Instagram plugged the underlying security hole.

  • the leaker said it was possible to exploit the Instagram bug in an automated way, at a rate of roughly 1 million accounts per hour, which is much faster than first thought.

    • At that rate, it would have taken almost two weeks to download the 700 million-user records, and longer to obtain the entire database.

  • A functioning prototype for a handheld that never was, was recently discovered in a pawn shop "in a small Canadian city"

  • The Nvidia Shield Portable 2  is an Android-powered portable gaming device that looks basically like an Xbox 360 controller with a five-inch LCD screen stuck to it

  • The person who found the prototype traded his old Shield to help pay for this one, and then went to work trying to figure out what it is and where it came from.

  • Compared to the original, he says:

    • "It has a front camera,

    • The screen looks better and is brighter,

    • I think it adjusts to light,

    • feels even more solid than the original, better magnet setup for the top piece,

    • shuts down instantly instead of a couple of seconds like the original,"

    • Better middle button layout than original, middle buttons are also like a touch pad more than a physical button."

Samsung bricks UK TVs with botched firmware update

Source 1: http://www.alphr.com/samsung/1006760/samsung-bricks-uk-tvs-with-botched-firmware-update

  • A firmware update sent out to high-end 4K British and European TVs on 8 August has bricked TVs so severely that users will need to send them back to Samsung for repair.

  • Following the update sets that were working fine literally hours earlier would either not turn on at all, or be stuck to a single channel, without working remotes or changeable volume.

  • Angry User: “We spent nearly £1,400 on this TV two weeks ago,...it stopped working from day two. What’s even more frustrating is the customer service: all I get is ‘we are aware of the issue and will get back’. Six days on and counting.”

  • Samsung: “We've had it confirmed that the solution that our TV guys have been testing works...It would need to be installed by an approved Samsung engineer, so please contact our TV Support teams so they can arrange a suitable appointment for you.”

  • TVs affected include the 2017 MU6, MU7 and MU8 ranges

  • Curiously, the problem only seems to affect European sets, with no corresponding issue with matching American models.

Lawsuit: Amazon sold eclipse glasses that cause “permanent blindness”

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/08/lawsuit-amazon-sold-eclipse-glasses-that-cause-permanent-blindness/

  • A South Carolina couple claims that Amazon sold defective eclipse-watching glasses that partially blinded them during the historic coast-to-coast solar eclipse on August 21.

  • The couple says that because of the eyewear purchased from Amazon, they are now suffering from "blurriness, a central blind spot, increased sensitivity, changes in perception of color, and distorted vision."

  • Amazon issued a recall of defective and perhaps counterfeit eclipse eyewear in an e-mail sent out to customers before the event.

  • According to the lawsuit: "Amazon’s August 19, 2017 e-mail 'recall' was tragically too little, too late. Its e-mail notification was insufficient to timely apprise customers of the defective nature of their glasses, and resulted in Plaintiffs and members of the proposed class using defective Eclipse Glasses,"

  • The suit also demands unspecified monetary damages, punitive damages, and legal fees and costs.

Half the chat today seemed to be some variation of "where's Luke?".

Anyone who tells you that you can't do something is unimaginative and probably a coward.

Just a quick note regarding the HTC Vive controllers, it's a common mistake to "pull" the trigger, "pulling" it makes your arm tense up moving the controller making it inaccurate, instead you should "press" the trigger as if it was... well... a button (which it is). This is very similar to properly firing a pistol if that helps. That being said I do agree a better solution is needed for typing in VR.

Wasn't there a mandatory recall on the note 7? Did they get a replacement phone back or some other samsung phone? How can they get a discount , if they don't even have their note 7? And if they do have it, won't they get in trouble for not bringing it in, during the recall period?
