and it is time to put the old king to his final rest the sapphire amd radeon hd 7970 vapor-x ghz edition 6gb

it serve me well for around 5-6 years

and now im stuck between these two

The extra VRAM shouldn't really be an issue. The 1060 is marginally faster, uses less power, and has a newer feature set, so it's definitely what I would recommend.

as far as i know the 980 does not have an 8gb variance, the best 980 you can get is the 980ti and it has 6gb of vram, but... vram shouldnt be an issue anyway, so if you can get your hands on a 980-980ti itll be definitely better than a 1060

980Ti, yes. 980, no. A GTX 1060 is on par with a GTX 980 performance wise, and has more room for high res textures due to extra memory.

Indeed. There were some laptop variants which had 8gb, but certainly no standard desktop cards.

1060 all the way:

-1060 slightly faster

-more ram
-1060 will probs have a more of a warranty

-980 doesn't have dp 1.4

980 is better for fps. friend has had one for a couple years and he gets 1000+ fps in games, where as i have a 1060 and only get around 500 fps in games. 980 also has more gigs. get the 980

interesting... i own a gtx 1070 for my daily rig and a 980ti in my htpc, and i reallly never noticed any difference in performance at both 1080p and 1440p (Dx 11), theyre usually 3-4 fps apart and sometimes the 980ti takes the win... not in dx 12 of course. but that chart is saying something different... i wonder if theres something wrong with my 1070 and maybe it runs slower than it should.

worst troll ever

even if this was true, it would be because of cpu bottleneck.

i would personally get a second hand 980ti, you can pick them up for just a bit more than a 1060 6gb and theyre much better.

Hard to say. It's fairly unanimous that the 1070 is faster than the 980 Ti

However, I don't think it's so much faster that it would be obvious unless you did a direct side by side comparison. Perhaps run TimeSpy on both systems and compare the GPU scores? If the 980Ti system is truly faster, or on par in your instance, there could be a bottleneck in the 1070 system.

Between the 2, I'd say 1060.

It doesn't have as much VRAM, but at 1080p, there are very, VERY few games which even use 75% of the amount of VRAM it has.

Performance is roughly identical between the 2, while the 1060 also consumes less power and likely outputs less heat.

That chart refers to a reference 980TI and I highly doubt you have a reference model. Reference clocks are 1000mhz, and AIB cards generally run at 1400mhz. So in most cases the difference between reference and AIB is 20-30%, which is why your 980TI outperforms your 1070.

Gtx 980 does not have 8Gb, there is something wrong there.

And even if it had, I would still go with the 1060.

So 1060 all the way.

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.
