LG's newest Phone has a serious branding problem

AlTech

LG's newest Phone, the LG V30, has a massive branding problem.

LG has less confidence in their brand than they have in the Bang & Olufsen brand. This is BIG news.

lg_v30_ifa_2017_vladsavov.0.jpg.6635fa7cacb7580c18a3fd341a85aab0.jpg

Quote

Today, LG unveiled what easily qualifies as its nicest, most refined, and most promising smartphone of all time. The LG V30 ticks almost all the design, spec, and feature boxes while deftly avoiding the gimmicks that have plagued LG’s previous efforts. And just as this moment in the global spotlight arrives for LG, the logo most of the world will see is that of Bang & Olufsen. What the hell?

In the United States, LG will distribute the V30 with its “V30” graphic featured in the middle of the phone’s back. In other places, that spot might be occupied by network operator insignia, but for the majority of markets, the big, round, and utterly classic Bang & Olufsen logo will be the one most closely associated with the V30.

Context as to why this important:

Quote

LG has a partnership with B&O that saw the latter produce a hi-fi audio module for the G5, and just this week Bang & Olufsen’s first OLED TV was an LG panel augmented with some of that Danish design and audio engineering. Inside the LG V30 box, there’s a pair of B&O Play (Bang & Olufsen’s more affordable consumer brand, which, confusingly, still uses the B&O logo) earphones that are tuned specifically to sound great from the V30. LG even makes some unspecific claims about B&O Play contributing to tuning the audio system inside its awesome new smartphone. So, sure, the Bang & Olufsen brand can be on the outside of the V30, I don’t have a problem with its presence — I’m just a bit shocked by its prominence.

So yeah, LG basically has very little confidence in it's own brand. This is not good. LG needs to appear strong and confident if it wants consumers to be attracted to the V30. Customers purchasing the V30 may become more acquainted with the Bang & Olufsen rather than LG. This whole fiasco could cause non techies to be more confused about phone purchasing decisions.

Who actually gives a shit. I don't think people will be forgetting what phone they have. This does nothing for the phone other than remind you you have decent audio components. This logo isn't news.

Bang & Olufsen did practically nothing to deserve the branding on the phone. And LG's logo is placed where Bang & Olufsen's should be.

This tells us that LG doesn't think their brand has selling power or that they are not confident enough in their brand. If they have a brand recognition problem then i could potentially see why they'd want to do this but afaik, LG doesn't have a brand recognition problem.

I really don't think in this case it will. The LG logo is still on the back of the phone and given there marketing towards the audio people will understand. They're also not the first to do this, my htc one x had a beats logo on the back no one was confused. I think this is a fairly nit picky criticism

LG have had their logo at the bottom for several generations. It's not like they have moved their own logo to make room for B&O. It's just that they have added another logo in a spot that has been left blank on all their other phones.

This seems like a lot of fuss about nothing.

Yes but that doesn't necessarily mean that Bang & Olufsen's logo needs to be on there. It could have been positioned to better reflect the importance of the partnership.

The middle of a phone is a more prominent location for a brand's logo. I would find it odd or concerning if Samsung put their logo at the bottom of their phones with Qualcomm's logo in the middle or whatever.

Before the bezeless trend LG always displayed the LG logo prominently on the the front of their phones. I think its more likely they just liked the design of it at the bottom more.

You reckon its LG paying B&O for the sticker, or B&O paying LG for an obvious and permanent ad spot on the phones?

It could be either. If LG is trying to appeal to audio enthusiasts then it could just be LG paying for the B&O Logo.

I would find it hard to believe LG is doing this for free unless they really legit don't have any faith or confidence in their brand.

Well in the end I think yeah there isn't all that much to this... the only thing worth mentioning I suppose is that this B&O has a very "shitty" logo to my personal taste... It does hurt the phone aesthetics especially considering this is to be high end... as @AluminiumTech somewhat mentioned you don't see Apple or Samsung putting any secondary logos on their phones, refined looks even when comes down to this (especially when it is such an ugly logo).
