Is this laptop upgradeable?

I'm looking to pre-order (yes, I know, blasphemy, but I need this quick) this laptop: http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-spectre-x360-convertible-laptop-15t-touch-1wb97av-1

if needed, I would order it in a 512GB SSD, and 16GB RAM variety, but ideally, I'd like to get the base model with 256GB storage, and 8GB RAM, and upgrade, since +$150 for 8GB of RAM seems a bit excessive.

How upgradeable is this laptop? does anyone know?

Apparently HP feel the need to fill both slots of that laptop with 4GB each (assholes). That's bloody stupid. So unless you buy the 8GB version, chuck out both sticks, and buy two new ones, there isn't really any other option. Best bet is to get the 12 GB edition (4GB + 8GB) and swap the 4GB for an 8GB.

Nice catch.

but is it upgradeable at all?

can I take off the bottom and access the SODIMM slots without royally fucking up my new $1300 laptop?

also, yeah -- assholes.

charging $150 for 8GB of RAM is a dick move, as is going 2x4 (probably raises manufacturing costs too -- they just want to be dicks). if they had charged $70 for an upgrade from 8  to 16, I would've just bought first-party.

Couldn't find anything on that specific model yet, but the older model with a Kaby Lake processors and GeForce 940MX had upgradable storage and RAM according to... http://laptops.reviewed.com/content/hp-spectre-x360-15-inch-2017-laptop-review

Thankfully, HP's used standard RAM slots and an M.2-type SSD so you'll be able to upgrade it later on.

It's definitely upgradeable. Whether or not the SODIMM slots are accessible without voiding your warranty is unknown to me. I'd take a bet and say no (all the laptops I've owned haven't done that, but then again I've never owned an HP) but if HP are willing to fill both slots, what's to say they won't make more dick moves. It's a shame really, as it's a beautiful laptop.

Aggred.  Be sure to order sodims (although you should know that) and you might want to wait till u get the laptop to know what to get as I would probably recommend the same brand, speed, etc.

I'm not sure that they need to be the same brand. Speed, yes, but I've installed kingston 2133mhz ddr3 sodimm into my samsung laptop (which had some samsung brand 2133mhz ddr3) and it works fine.

From the HP site, it looks like only RAM and storage is upgradeable (or at least, replaceable). I don't like how HP offers 8GB RAM option in 2x4GB sticks cuz if you wanna go 16GB in the future, you would have no choice but to shell out more cash for 2x8GB sticks. So in this case, as @JaegerB pointed out, get 12GB (4+8GB).

Daily drivers:

- HP Elite x2 1012 G2: Intel Core i7-7600U, Intel HD Graphics 620 + Aorus Gaming Box GTX 1080 eGPU, 16GB LPDDR3-1867, 256GB Toshiba NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD + 128GB Toshiba Exceria UHS-1 U3 MicroSD, 12.3" 2736x1824 + HP Pavilion 22cwa Monitor 21.5" 1080p IPS, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

Well, I don't know how you'd replace anything other than RAM or storage... Laptops are notoriously hard to work on (I mean opening them up, etc) because of their size. Also you might have some luck selling off the 4GB stick on ebay or craigslist. No point wasting brand new RAM.

Also, just to add, I couldn't find a taredown guide on Ifixit.com so you might want to be careful, and if your forgetful, you might want to record yourself taking it apart, so you don't screw up putting it back together.  And, be sure not to drop it like @linustech can't seem to stop doing.

Yep, do all that. Also pick up an ESD wristband. It's alright that there isn't an ifixit teardown guide, those can be unreliable sometimes and it's an expensive new laptop marketed at businesspeople. I'm not surprised there isn't one. Basic rules of laptop teardown:

1. Make sure it's completely powered down.

2. Disconnect the battery connector.

3. Sort screws out, put them in containers by type.

4. Don't do it on a carpet or wearing loose clothing (don't tempt the ESD gods)

5. Don't force anything. Laptop chassis are often very thin and can snap/bend.

6. Be careful with the mobo caps, etc. Laptop caps don't really have to be that durable and can be cracked off easily.

I understand your point, but it's easier to get the same thing, and not having to worry about compatibility than get something different and haven't not work, because then you have to hassle with returns witch are inharently a pain.  Unless the ran is super expensive compared to what it should be, better safe than sorry.

Absolutely, but I can foresee it being difficult to get an obscure stock RAM stick. They're basically unbranded and are very hard to find.

That's what most laptops' upgrade options are these days, I miss the days of replaceable mobile CPUs (with the M prefix). Considering these kinds of laptops are marketed at businesspeople and not gamers (who are generally expected to be screwing around inside the laptop upgrading things), I wouldn't be surprised if it does void the warranty.
