Day 0: Finding a temporary CPU cooler

IMG_20170822_190947.jpg.d74a33cc9b82ce1006e91b7ada00bcfd.jpg

All shipping from california, but knowing my luck, I'll get the CPU cooler later. So I figured I'd see just how small of a cooler can cool an i7 6700K thats been delidded. And it turns out... Not much is needed.

IMG_20170822_122412.thumb.jpg.8dcebc9ec7f04229aed4dd0d69702c4d.jpg

IMG_20170822_122702.thumb.jpg.59d2e11c1f82cc5e39d15e13c2e31172.jpgIMG_20170822_125247.thumb.jpg.db99b49b7804e3a49aa08d6343d40a0a.jpg

See what slug based heatsinks and delidding can do? Take note, intel.

IMG_20170822_130926.thumb.jpg.55fe02c46eb3311cf39fb850837b9896.jpg

Complete!

Spoiler

Boy, what a ride this was.

IMG_20170823_135354.thumb.jpg.de6802a6d545c93748c415c1a095c44b.jpg

First thing I did was cram, and I mean CRAM everything in here.

IMG_20170823_151608.thumb.jpg.efd8b47fc2c529c46585233dac44208f.jpg

Intake fans are literally right up against the GPU. This GPU has a fanless BIOS, so it might actually stay fanless for a decent load.

IMG_20170823_152158.thumb.jpg.fc5676d2eab7366f00ef7f52df9e68e6.jpg

Putting the cryorig C7 in wasn't easy, I had to edit my old backplate since the supplied one hit the chassis...

It was also SO CLOSE to hitting the inductors on the board

IMG_20170823_154243.thumb.jpg.965e148ec24f5b611aceaa64dbc67fcf.jpg

So this is where I'm at right now:

IMG_20170823_154624.thumb.jpg.c56468511cb85a8206972c7d07e50b42.jpg

Time to button it up and stress test it!

IMG_20170823_160219.thumb.jpg.cb9ba5f9c1473bc6cc24a2ac05f42d54.jpg

IMG_20170823_160801.thumb.jpg.cfca2577d376f81ca3ca4a520d0c0816.jpg

It runs pretty toasty, and unfortunately that is because most of the GPU exhaust is EXITING the CPU intake.

IMG_20170823_160417.jpg.f798847016a9f13efbd60449093b99a4.jpg

Thats too hot for me, and its not even overclocked. Lets see what I can do about that. My old cooler, the nexus low 7000 was too tall for this case.

nx-low-7000-large.jpg

So in typical iamdarkyoshi fashion, I edited it.

IMG_20170823_173959.thumb.jpg.13d4bd38c401e421865446eea6b3de8f.jpg

It sits very low in the machine, and I had some clearance issues with the fan. Nothing the saw can't handle! Note that this is an EXHAUST now.

IMG_20170823_180536.thumb.jpg.3eb3a4d2241b1326a1eb79b83baf9fc3.jpg

I added some intakes on the TOP, so the CPU can inhale cool air as well as the GPU exhaust.

IMG_20170823_184848.thumb.jpg.3b04dcdaa1afe82673e1f2a3d6b1773a.jpg

IMG_20170823_185858.thumb.jpg.35cd0c0777ac1d4ed5d20db0f7d24f16.jpg

IMG_20170823_192704.thumb.jpg.2627972b122dac7b5a8f85c44a4190dc.jpg

Lets test those thermals again, but with a +500mhz overerclock :D

IMG_20170824_155948.thumb.jpg.e19162a11cb452514271f51b04754f91.jpg

MUUUUUCH better. Its quieter too.

Not much left to do but add some case badges and my trademark googly eye.

Hm, that last image of task manager has my attention... is your display ok?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Nice max level console build, though I am surprised that you aren't going with a Dr.  Zaber, Ncase M1 or Dancase with this calibre of components

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Oh, that sucks.  I wondered why it changed - btw, a Node 202 can fit a 3.5mm hdd under the gpu

lol I don't even use a 2.5in SSD

And with an EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3, I'm going to be hard pressed to find any extra room lol

There's no excuse for intel not soldering their dies. AMD does it and sells their CPUs at a lower price and still turns a profit. Other people respond with comments like "the die is too small to solder". Okay what about intel clarkdale? The dies were smaller than the 6700K and those were soldered.

Sorry just pissed delidding is needed at all.

Preach, mah dude. Even my Haswell Pentium feels the burn with a flippity floppin 280mm AIO.

Well done! very nicely put together. I was considering a similar build myself a while back with the same case ....

I am pretty sure he cut out the fins on the underside so the Heat pipes wrap around the fan.

Yeah that's what I thought :)

The upward fins on the base were held in by mounting screws. I replaced that block of metal with four nuts.
