I5 and ssd or i7 and hdd

I'm looking at 2 laptop 1 has

-i5 6200u 940mx 2gb and 8gb ram and 256gb ssd

the other laptop has 

- i7 6500u 940mx 4gb 12gb ram and 1tb hdd

 

whay should I get?

What are you planning to do with it and what laptop is it?

I would get the i7 and swap the HDD to an SSD tbh

i5 and i7 tells me nothing for mobile chips. 

 

Go i5 as they are both dual-cores with HT.

they're both U's, you'll have more benefit from an SSD than from a slight bump in clock speed.

 

however.. depending on what you plan to use it for, the 256GB>1TB thing may be a different thing to consider, as well as the VRAM and RAM bump.

wait and see if you can pick up a machine with a mx150, miles ahead of the 940MX

I'd personally get the second one and find a way around to also throw in an SSD. For instance, there are brackets which go into the optical drive bay for laptops and they can fit an SSD there instead of the DVD drive, that's only if that laptop doesn't have any mSATA/M.2 slots for SSDs inside.

Yeah, a true 4 (Maybe 8t?) core ULP chip is coming really soon as well, that + MX 150 will be beast.

I would get the i7. as It is very hard (impossible) to upgrade processors and video cards on laptops.  Where as upgrading a hard drive to SSD is easy.

Depends on the laptop. If it is something with easily accessible internals for upgrading hard drive then go with the i7 and upgrade to ssd later.

I remember reading an article showing that there was very little performance difference from Kaby Lake dual core i5s and i7s. On top of that the i5 had slightly better battery life.

 

I'd personally go for the i5, 256 SSD. Can you upgrade the Ram and SSD?

I'd say wait for the Coffee Lake ultrabooks if you can.

 

Otherwise, i5 with the SSD. If you're using it for daily tasks and maybe some light gaming, it'll do you fine.

1st option, the i5-6200U and i7-6500U have almost no noticeable difference (unless if you do benchmarks, but that beats the purpose). Or try looking for ones with MX 150 for about the same price as the first option such as this http://www.microcenter.com/product/481303/Aspire_5_A515-51G-52R1_156

What I meant was does the i5 laptop have upgradable Ram and storage? So if in the future you want to, you can upgrade the ram and SSD.

It also has more cache and a bit faster iGPU That makes the i7 around 11% faster on average, which is a pretty decent improvement along with more RAM and VRAM considering what I said (that it's possible to get an SSD as well later on).

Problem is that upgrading the CPU is much more of a hassle than upgrading the HDD in terms of accessibility at least from my experience. Upgrading the CPU is sometimes not even possible

I strongly suggest you to wait for 8250U/8550U + MX150 laptops
