Do I need exact same GPU for SLI?

Thecoltr

Hi,

I currently have a GTX 1080 founders edition in my gaming PC. In order to do SLI I know I need the same card, but does it have the be a founders edition or will it work with just a normal 1080?

It will work with any 1080, just know that the other card will have to lower its clocks to match the founder's clocks.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Every 1080 will work, it doesn't need to be another founders edition.

Also make sure you have an SLI bridge, you will need that.

Also, why do you want to go SLI? These days it's not exactly recommended. Upgrading to a 1080ti would be more reliable tbh.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

someone else can clarify as it's been a while since i ran dual gpu's and that was crossfire, but i think they have to be the same model (1080 in this case) and pairing it with say a oc 1080, both will run at stock speeds.

as long as the cards are based on the same pcb it should work though someone with more experience in this field can probably elaborate

Have you tried to perform a sudden temporary interrupt of the electricity flow to your computational device followed by a re-initialization procedure of the central processing unit and associated components?

You need the same family of cards, i.e. a 1080 with a 1080 and a 1060 6GB with a 1060 6GB. A 1060 6GB will not work with a 1060 3GB without degraded performance or at all in some instances.

You can use different brands of a specific GPU together.  The thing to keep in mind:  the slower card will pull the faster card to its speed.  Major reason back when AIB cards meant a serious speed boost, people advise same brand.

Pascal though.  Only difference it seems now a days is a beefy air cooler on AIB since Pascal is voltage locked and encrypted BIOS.

The amount of 1080s with worse cooler than the FE is super duper little. Chances are the other card will usually clock higher (unless it's another blower cooler), and so would have to lower clocks.

save your cash , wait a while, then upgrade to the new best performing single card... sli is never good, and rarely optimized in games... Sucks having a gpu sitting idle in most games!

Then sell the 1080 and upgrade to a TI... lol I've just been burned buying dual gpu cards before,(radeon 7990) and an nvidia dual gpu card... sucks when half your card sits idle in a good portion of games, since they poorly support sli/cf. There's a reason its becoming less and less popular to have multi gpu setups!

based on recent release cycles and volta rumors... probably not even close. You've likely got 6-ish months at most before it gets dwarfed by the next biggest and greatest thing from Nvidia.

That's not why at all. competition is great, but Intel doesn't "innovate" simply because there really isn't a whole lot of room left to do so lol.

Not exactly. Intel needs competition in the space. They're been doing research for years, but never had a force behind them pushing for the use of the research.
