Do people actually like film grain on?

FrostedPlate

It's always the first setting I turn off when I boot into a new game, i absolutely hate it and it makes everything look muddy. Does anyone even like this? and why? Haha.

Sometimes, for it can add the nice cinematic effect that's associated with old things as depicted in the games as backstory or whatnot.

Sig under construction.

People have said the same "cinematic effect" about black bars and low framerates. At what point is that just an excuse because movies do it :P

Yeah but I guess it's a bit like CRTs, film grain was a issue on film and old TVs. Maybe it appeals to that demographic.

I don't, in my opinion it doesn't really add anything to the experience. It doesn't make it seem more "cinematic" to me if I know it's artificial. One thing is having those things on a movie as a side effect of production, another is going out of my way to put it onto a game. But hey, as long as I can turn it off I don't mind having the option.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

No and I usually dislike motion blur too.

It's these two things that they apply to games to make them feel more artsy, but it just makes them looks muddy or full of lag respectively.

Certain instances yes.
It can act like dithering and creates more colors making a scene with lets say a solid 1 colored blob look more natural. - This is most notable in shadows, or with extremely bright objects.
In that kinda situation its like AA, is for jaggies, and you don't usually read about people debating AA vs no AA.

I didn't even realise this was a thing until I booted up Titanfall 2 recently and it was on by default. Turned it off asap

Absolutely no. Hated it ever since first Mass Effect.
