Not all Vega GPUs are made the same

Apparently, AMD uses two chip packaging locations for the Vega GPU for the two main SKUs -- Vega 64 and Vega 56.

According to several official slides from AMD, there are minor differences in the physical packaging, depending on the country of origin:

  • AMD uses both Samsung & SK Hynix HBM, Samsung on Vega FE & Vega64, SK Hynix on Vega56 & Vega64
  • South Korea packed Vega 10s don't have the filling between/around chips
  • Taiwan packed Vega 10s have filling between/around chips
  • The height difference between GPU & HBM is only on the South Korea packed Vega 10s, it's 40 µm, no issues when thermal paste fills the gap
  • Taiwan packed Vega 10s are 0.1mm shorter than South Korea Packed
  • In retail, Vega 64s are supposed to have filling, Vega 56's not

In the end, I am sure they all have the same performance. Same as your RAM. No matter the manufacture, as long as the specs matches, the performance is identical. This is still not as bad as Samsung using different CPU between US (or is it NA or just US/Canada?) and the rest of the world market on its flagship Galaxy phones. Snapdragon and Samsung very own Exynos SoC, where performance isn't exactly the same.

I believe it's US&Canada, China and possibly Japan for Snapdragon, rest being Exynos.

And this really doesn't matter as long as it's within spec. There will be variations. This variation is greater than what we're used to though but if performance and thermals (and whatever else the case may be) don't deviate too much, there is no cause for complaint. This might end up like the Noctua 'scandal'.

True, but if Samsung had stock android i personally wouldnt mind too much about the CPU they would be using (Exynos 8895 on all flagships would be funny :P).

I guess Samsung users wont be eating Oreos anytime soon nonetheless, at least not as pure ones even when they get it.

Well this is interesting.... It SHOULDN'T result in performance differences though. Unless they somehow fucked it up royally it will still perform the same.

I doubt even my LG phone will get Oreo since I'm still stuck on 7.0.0. :P

The feeling of being left behind even tough you paid top cash is so mean :D.

At least team Oreo will save your phone from bootloops, which means the Pixel 2 XL\LG V30 wont be DOA for some users xP.

The only variation I see, is if the specs don't actually match (like latency), or overclocking (but that varies between chips from the same manufacture)

This has already been reported on some time ago.

Reviews packages came with failed vega chips. They took pictures of these and claimed it meant that vega had some filled chips and some not. But its more likely that they failed at different stages of production.

So unless these pictures are from actual vega cards then its not real news.

So just difference since different source location made of. The one with dark substrate seems great for like filling the gaps for like thermal paste spread.

I'd say It's more comparable to when Apple used both Samsung and TSMC to manufacture the A9 which had a somewhat negative effect.

*Not saying anything is going to happen in this scenario*

Well in OP defense, yours is on height which wasn't clear.. this one is one different chip manufacture.

Problem is for AIB's and having to figure out which particular batch they actually got and god forbid they get another batch from different origin... then you got a big problem as either you make changes to production or wait for a "proper" batch with which your particular card was designed for. I hope AMD realizes this and only ships parts from one origin country to the same AIB all the time but the way this launch has been handled, I wouldn't bet on that.

Oh trust me I didn't spend top cash on this. :P Look up the LG Aristo and you'll get the idea. Though apparently it is meant to get 8.0, so hopefully that happens and HOPEFULLY they'll use the V20's newer UI instead of the older one that I'm stuck with now.
