Intel releases 16 core CPU for $449 USD

Intel finally released their 16 Core CPU priced at $449 USD.

This is a low power 32W CPU belonging to the Intel ATOM family line of CPU's.

Currently, there are two motherboards that I was able to find.

One from SuperMicro, and the other from Gigabyte.

 

Please note, that the server division of Gigabyte is seperate from their consumer division.

 

This news is now a week old. Will Linus make a video about its performance?

Only time will tell.

 

EDIT: Intel page.

Some sites quote it as 32W while intel quote its as 31W. Base Speed: 2.0GHz No Turbo.

Theoretically, YES, but its integrated GPU is nothing to write home about.

Its integrated GPU probably isn't meant to really be used..though I would imagine that if they shoved it in a laptop, it would actually have the graphical capabilities to be usable.

2.1GHz base, 2.4 boost. Something is odd here though, the theoretical performance doesnt line up with the TDP or price. Anyone here understand how atom architectures work?

The new atom's are actually pretty damn good. I have one in my tablet and it flys through windows 10 64bit.

The title got me excited, I almost thought for a moment that Intel would actually try to be ultra competitive with AMD (As hard as that is to believe). But of course its an atom.... (Low power server perhaps?)

I should have been more specific.  They're good at what they're designed for, which is mainly lightweight single-task programs.  Something that actually uses 16 cores (or even more than 2) is going to be too much for an ATOM though.  You aren't going to be rendering videos on a tablet.

Encoding videos is one of the best uses of these atoms. Probably going to be amazing for freeNas/Plex servers.

It varies from model to model. Some are single channel, 1866. (full lineup: https://ark.intel.com/products/series/97941/Intel-Atom-Processor-C-Series)

The 16-core seems to be dual channel 2400, as you said.
