Age of Empires 4 confirmed! And 2 and 3 remakes

Clanscorpia

Microsoft has released a trailer for the next version of Age of Empires, Age of Empires 4.

From the trailer it looks like they will be combining all of the civilizations from all of the previous games instead of making a new game in the modern era. Little has been confirmed by Microsoft except that it will be a Windows 10 exclusive. There is no release date or any other information confirmed.

There is also plans of remakes for Age of Empires 2 and 3 in the wake of Age of Empires Definitive Edition.

Im personally extremely hyped for this as Age of Empires 2 and 3 were my childhood games and I still play them to this day. This is one game Im definitely pre-ordering :P

aren't those games limited to half vsync or 30fps on most people's monitor?

No gameplay footage, bah. I hope it doesn't go in the visual style of AOE online and Civ VI.

Ensemble Studios was one of the most talented PC gaming studios, and Microsoft's closure of it was one of PC gaming history's greatest tragedies. I wonder who is working on AOE4.

The new graphics in the AOE1 remaster don't look good at all, IMO - they look washed out, blurry (bloomy), and with drab lighting. And AOE1R being a Windows Store exclusive means I won't be buying it. If it comes to Steam, or maybe GoG, I'd get it.

As for a remaster of 2... I thought the HD edition was good enough. But I'm curious to see how an AOE2 remaster will look.

I'm playing through AOE3 again recently, and it's the one that could use a remaster most of all, IMO. Though, it does kind of still hold up well.

The older ones probably, the latest one (disk wise) was released for P4s. The ones on steam run at 60FPS for me

If so, guess I won't be playing it, since the Windows 10 Store is incapable of allowing installation of apps on drive pools setup using StableBit's Drive Pool software drive pool drivers. Oh well, guess they don't want my money, which is fine by me since I also like keeping my money.

One game doesn't set a precedence, though. I don't see anything wrong with capping the frame-rate to 60Hz if there's a reason for it.

Super stoked on this, AoE was one of my all time favorite games.

Though Empire Earth, I'd say, had a bit of a better feel...

The animations in the original AOE2 are 15, 20, or 30 FPS. I can't remember which, but maybe that's where people get that idea. AOE2 HD has higher animation FPS, though.

Also, screen panning the original was choppy, but the HD remaster has smooth panning. The original feels more choppy than the HD, that could be what people are thinking of.

The implication was that Windows Store games are capped, not AoE games specifically.

Awesome! Good to know they're encouraging me to acquire the game outside of the Windows Store via a backup from our other family members' PC. That's exactly what I wanted to hear since it means I'll have an easier time moving the game from drive to drive as well between my PCs. Mind you, if they release the game for Xbox One as well I might be interested in sharing a purchase with my friends Microsoft Account since he's got an Xbox One.

yeah, they clearly have given you permission to go ahead and pirate it.   I mean what else would they mean when they say windows store only?

It might come to Steam as Windows 10 "only" could indicate DX12 being the API.

Whoa, I'd never pirate it. That deprives the developers of their money, and as a web developer myself, I know how that feels. I'd simply share someone else's account instead, or boycott it altogether. I don't have time to dicker around with more game stores than Steam or Battle.net, so everything that's Windows, Origin, or uPlay exclusive just doesn't get played by me.
