Looking to upgrade current CPU, best bang for buck

Go to solution Solved by Cajmo,

I have an older computer that I would like to upgrade the CPU for about $100. I have a GIGABYTE GA-MA78LM-S2H (rev 1.3) AM2+/AM3 with an AMD Athlon II X4 620 in it currently. The CPU is starting to wear down and I am looking to upgrade with about a budget of $100. Please let me know what would be the best bang for my buck.

Thanks in advance,

Josh

Yes, just don't be an idiot lol (make sure it says used and not for parts or repair in the item desc. before you buy it)

I have bought half a dozen CPUs on ebay with no problems. Buy from a reputable seller with a lot of good feedback. CPUs are generally the most robust of PC parts, nothing to worry about.

Black Knight-

Ryzen 5 5600, GIGABYTE B550M DS3H, 16Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz, Asrock RX 6800 XT Phantom Gaming,

Seasonic Focus GM 750, Samsung EVO 860 EVO SSD M.2, Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe, Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon

Daughter's Rig;

MSI B450 A Pro, Ryzen 5 3600x, 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz, Silicon Power A55 512GB SSD, Gigabyte RX 5700 Gaming OC, Corsair CX430

On used, how long do you think it will last before needing replacing?

There's no reason a CPU shouldn't last 20 years. Used is used, whether it was you using it the last 4 years, or someone else.

I suspect your CPU is just fine and only showing its age against newer programs. When was the last time you had a fresh install of Windows?

This for sure.

This is off topic, but how well does your x5680  do gaming? I've been interested in oc'ing an x5650 and using it for the value.

Save your money and buy I new CPU, board and ram.

Anything you buy for this board will be over priced even used honestly,

You could also take your $100 and find a used hp or dell biz computer with better cpu and use that till you can buy a new setup

If you could double your budget this would be a solid starter fro budget gaming. A PSU and video card would be needed fro gaming, but the CPU, RAM, and mobo are all solid.
