no this won't work. the Dutch gov tried it with thepiratebay but it only worked temporary because everyone switched to something else, started using a proxy or something else

Another example of the Australian government not understanding how things work. To be fair in this particular case they're not alone. Isn't it comical that to make it harder to access pirated content you have to make it illegal and enforce that law? Shouldn't a service I pay for be more convenient than what I can get for free? They seem so concerned about the rights of copyright owners, but don't care in the slightest for the rights of the consumer.

 

If I buy a blu-ray, I can only watch the movie on certified hardware with paid (or ad-supported) closed software; that excludes any portable device, any convenient in-house dlna streaming, the convenience of being able to bring a single hard disk with you instead of 50 discs in 50 boxes if you want to watch your movies away from home. On top of that I get regional locks, on-disk unskippable ads and other non-content I don't give a damn about, a hilarious copyright notice I wouldn't see if I had pirated the movie and other arbitrary restrictions that sometimes make their way onto the disc.

 

On the other hand, if I pirate a movie I get a pure, unrestricted video file that I can watch on virtually anything and won't hassle me with anything that is not the movie, in the language I choose and with the subtitles file I like.

 

So while it's wrong to not pay the content creators, they make it so absolutely and pointlessly heinous to do so that I can't blame people who can't stand it. It's much like intrusive internet ads which get so much in the way of your experience that, at some point, you just flip and turn on adblock.

This is why if i ever get blu-rays for a event or i decide to buy them on special, i immediately rip them to a HDD to watch on a media player or for my laptop. As long as prices are much higher than other countries, piracy in Australia will remain rampant, and Foxtels new streaming service won't kick off as much as they think because there are alot of people like me who hate Murdoch

Or they could force the movie industry to actually make purchasing their stuff seem compelling. If on top of being expensive the service is crap, people won't stand for it. Furthermore movies are art and restricting their visibility like this, in my opinion, is a crime against humanity.

Ah, so that means everyones gonna stop doing drugs? Again, they are attacking the symptoms not the root of the problem and as long as the root is still there (only expensive prices and region locking and the shitty MTM we got that the government personally sabotaged so Murdoch could keep his foxtel empire) Piracy will never die.

The FTTP NBN was the first step in getting rid of pirates who didn't really want to pirate, you can thank our wonderfully stupid Coalition government to help piracy thrive until 2040 at the minimum as long as they are in.

That's a whole can of worms on its own, you can't prove pirated content is a lost sale and the author did not spend anything to make that copy. While downloading pirated content should probably count as a crime, claiming there are damages to be paid (for example) would be a stretch.

I don't think fines are gonna stop most people when a simple google search is gonna solve all their problems and im pretty sure alot of people know they are stealing by not paying. I have not gone to the movies in at least 7 years (im only 24) and pretty much the only time i ever watch movies is again, if given to me or on special and i rip them. Peer pressure doesn't help either but again, you know that Data retention crap they passed to try and combat "terrorism"? Nah it's to make sure they can keep an eye on you whenever they want and the first thing they did was sick the AFP on a journalist. 

 

This government is too stupid to fix the problem but the other side doesn't want to do it either at this point.

 

I can also make the same point with games, Games back in the day used to have demos so you could try it out and decide if you wanted to buy it or not, companies realise it loses them sales so they remove it and provide betas as long as you pre-purchase, again leading more people to piracy to try the game before deciding on buying or saying it was a bad game, and i don't blame them. Alot of games today need so many patches just to get them bloody working right.

People are going to be using the easiest, best service they can; rather than trying to make illegitimate methods more difficult to access, maybe focusing on making the legitimate methods easier to access with larger libraries at higher bitrates would be the better option. But what do I know?

 

I got HBO Now/Netflix because it is significantly easier to access what I want from them than it was to hunt down each episode of every show I wanted to watch. Piracy is a service issue, and the sooner content creators/producers/distributors and governments acknowledge this fact, the better.

 

Or they can keep going down the road they're on now, since that has obviously resulted in massive success in the past. /s

Custom Roms and uncertified devices are also not welcome on Netflix. Though I keep enough local content on my device that this is non-issue.

Like a custom rom or the root will do any harm for a media player app. They just being idiot for thining that someone using a phone to rip content. Incompetent idiots... Oh well if they dont want my money then i wont have problems with free-loading.

Netflix on Android allows content to be loaded offline in a directory only accessible by root. Obviously, they (content owners) don't want to simply give that content to user control.

Any ISP who has their customers sued will loose 50%+ of their customers, the reputation they can get by winning a case to get customer names will get them much more money from business than they pay.

Are they stupid. They do realise that if you block one website or shut them down more will spring up. You can't stop it, it's simply not possible. People will eventually just go to sharing USB stick with large amounts of pirated content on them at this point. That will never happen though because the internet can't be policed.
