SSD vs M.2

Does anyone know exactly the big differences between SSDs and M.2 SSDs?I know that M.2 is attached directly to the mobo but I'm not sure if it's worth more than the SSD.

M.2 is form factor like 2.5 inch

SATA is a type of interface

M.2 SSDs comes with either SATA or NVMe interface while 2.5 inch SSDs only support SATA

M.2 SATA SSD = 2.5 inch SATA SSD

2nd image is a 2.5 sata ssd

there is no such thing as a m.2 sata ssd

m.2 is a faster interface than sata and pcie, as sata is older tech and pcie is not designed specifically for ssds

Sata is a protocol like USB,you can have SATA in different shapes like M.2 and 3.5 like how USB has USB C and B and such.There is no speed difference between a SATA M.2 and a 2.5inch drive.There is a difference between a NVME M.2 and a SATA 2.5 though.But the returns are pretty minimal for the steep price

guess i'll rewatch some techquickies but i feel like I've been told differently

Wrong again. You can have a SATA SSD in an M.2 form factor. It would be the same as a 2.5” SATA SSD.

My ASUS GL502 has an M.2 SSD that interfaces via SATA. SATA SSDs on an M.2 form factor are usually used as lower-cost options.

 

The holy grail is obviously an M.2 drive which interfaces over PCI-E, otherwise known as NVMe M.2 SSDs.

There are M.2 PCI-e AHCI drives as well.
Search Samsung XP941 or SM951 (MZHPV256HDGL).
