Keep in mind, Cannonlake is just around the corner so I would wait for those benchmarks to be released. You'll need a different motherboard with the 300 series chipset for the Cannonlake CPUs to work, but for now here are your best options.

If high refresh rate 1080p:

Currently none, the I7 8700K or i7 8800K, what ever it's called, will be coming out soon, it should have 6 cores and 11% faster than the i7 7700K, idk how or why, but that's be the best for the price I think.

Yours faithfully

RAM is a little baller for someone on a budget... I mean it's sexy as all hell, but a little expensive...

Well with £1300 and no need for a GPU, I figure RAM could be a little bit baller.

I did miss that there is no SSD and OP didn't mention if a monitor was needed or not.

Didn't realize it actually fit into the budget. But I'd put the SSD first, still.

Why are you upgrading? What is your usage? If the rig is just for gaming, then upgrading from 4790k doesn't really give that much of a boost.

I'd rather get a SSD and maybe upgrading monitor/peripherals, if necessary.

Yah, just edited my post with an SSD and there's still £300 left so things can be adjusted still if a monitor is needed :)

I already have a monitor at 1600x900 (its fairly old) don't have an ssd never had a real need for one but if the system isn't really worth upgrading then I could just get one and a new monitor

With a 1080Ti I would definitely upgrade the monitor.

With a 1080 Ti, you should upgrade to a 2560x1440 monitor-_-

I would highly suggest looking at that AOC monitor.

Not sure what magic AOC is using but it supports G-Sync, FreeSync, and is 1440p at 144Hz. It's perfect for a 1080Ti :)

Before upgrading your CPU, upgrade your monitor. It's a much more important upgrade IMO ;)
