Any real difference 7700k vs 7800x for games?

I had a 7700k and recently moved to the 7800x, using a 1080ti and 1440p monitor. Used for more than gaming, but this topic pertains to games, like bf1, tomb raider, witcher 3, etc. 

 

Honestly i I seem to be getting the same fps with the 7800x, x299 got a bad rep at first but it's a good CPU. 

 

Should there be an fps difference in games at 1440p with a 1080ti, or is that more for other resolutions or gpus?

at 1440p you'll be GPU limited especially if you play on high/ultra settings with some anti-aliasing...if you drop the quality settings your framerate will go higher and then maybe you'd see the 7700K pulling ahead a little bit.

Imagine like this, these latest games usually doesn't use more than 8threads, so it reaches a point that if you're adding more threads won't help as the entire system already has enough to run, when this happens the only way to increase performance is by having faster single core performance which the 7700k slightly possess, in the end you changed 6 for half a dozen but gained more multi-tasking headroom thanks to the 2 extra hyper-threaded cores.

Kaby Lake and Skylake-X should have damn near the same single core and quad core performance. In games that don't use everything the 7700K offers, there should be no noticeable difference at average FPS.

 

It's minimums that they can really differ, the extra cores of the 7800X can keep background and non gaming tasks from eating up resources, but it won't have too much benefit if you're comparing to the 7700K.

 

Either way, you've chosen good chips for gaming.

1440p  is more GPU limited than CPU limited.  You may be able to find games that go both ways where a 7700K is  faster or a 7800X is faster but it's probably trading blows.

Welp when destiny 2 comes out you'll be glad for the extra cores if development promises of 16t usage are true.
