Laptop Screen 40pin to 30pin?

flameprincess2000

Huge problem...

I got a laptop screen for my Alienware 17 r2.

It's a 40pin, but the laptop is a 30pin...

How do I use the screen?

I've seen converter cables online but don't see any reviews on them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

40 pin is LVDS

30 pin is eDP. They are a different signal. You need to use the right screen.

Isn't there a converter cable I can get?...

I already have the screen and now you're saying it's just a waste?

Something like this???

I'd be VERY surprised if that worked. I'd suggest returning the display and getting a different one.

There are like no options out there which is the problem...

I have an Alienware 17 R2, with a 1080p 60hz monitor that has awful blur and such.

I bought a 120hz gsync monitor.

I don't know what to do x.x

So... You bought a panel for a laptop without it consulting the approved replacement parts list for that laptop and assumed ANY panel you got would fit int here?

...Why did that seem like a good idea?

I've done it before. It was supposed to be 30pins, but for some reason it's 40pins.

What approved replacement parts list?

I didn't assume any panel would fit.

There is usually a very narrow list of components taht can be swapped into a laptop.  The service manual, though not always publicly available, lists those approved parts that can be swapped in during servicing.  Without having access to this information you are basically going in blind and.. Well, this happens.

Even then. Dell being dell will only show some compatible stuff. It wouldn't show all the options, so something like this would never even be there if it fit.

I'm screwed then?

You got the wrong part for a laptop, so probably, yeah.  Laptops aren't modular like desktops.  The laptop has no room to fit in a eDP to LVDS connector even if you could find one and I don't think Gsync would even work through such an adapter.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that you're screwed.

Heh... can you possibly help me find a correct one then?

Sorry for the necro reply, but there's also 40-pin eDP.

30p = 2-lane eDP
40p = 4-lane ~or~ LVDS
44p = eDP (think it's still 4 lanes)

Anyhoo, I'm not sure if eDP works the same as something like pcie, but if it did, it's possible to make a pin-to-pin adapter, or to buy an appropriate replacement cable with 30-to-40 pin conversion. (more than likely you'd have to shop around china vendors or have one made)

An adapter would definitely not fit where it needs to go in a laptop unless you cut a hole for it
