opinions from those in the know: Dual 27" or one Ultrawide 34"? for gaming and productivity

r.perez

I currently have a 27" 2560x1440 Acer Predator IPS G-Sync Monitor. I am currently debating whether to sell this bad boy and replace it with the Acer Predator X34 (or similar) or buy a 2nd 27" IPS (non g-sync monitor most likely). I would like more desktop screen space overall, plus this solo 27" looks rather out of place next to my massive Case Labs SMA8.

I mainly play games on this rig but also do photo editing and video editing regularly. Thoughts from folks that switched from dual setups to 34" Ultrawide especially appreciated. Do you feel like your missing out on anything? Is the immersive gaming experience worth any modest trade-offs in productivity?

My all-time favorite personal monitor setup was what I had back in 2010, a Dell U3011 paired with dual 20" monitors in portrait mode flanking both sides. However, as much as I love 16:10, g-sync is too good to give up.

Also, isn't a new version of the X34 coming out soon? If so, should I hang on to the $$$ and wait for it?

Thanks

Specs in sig. I have 2 GTX 1080s in SLI, so driving the resolution shouldn't be an issue.

I'd get a second, more color accurate monitor if you do a lot of photo editing.

I run a small 25" ultrawide and a 24" 1080p monitor.  A single ultrawide would be ok, but I think it would drive me insane after having dual monitors for about 10 years.  you can split the content nicely on an ultrawide but you end up with the equivalent of two 4:3 screens side by side which would be great if you were working in word or excel all day as a single monitor, but its hard to beat dual monitors for real productivity.  also when gaming its nice to have that second screen for doing stuff.  also in a lot of games dont really support ultrawide.  it stretches the screen on the sides and cuts of a bit on the top and bottom.  My two main games right now are overwatch and csgo, and both of them stretch the screen and cut off the top and bottom a bit.  at least overwatch doesnt screw up the menus, but csgo I eventually gave up and started playing on my 16:9 monitor again because its pretty horrible in ultrawide.

I'd side with intender. Unless you do a *lot* of photo/video editing, the benefits of a 34" ultrawide vs two monitors (ideally one 144hz and the other color accuracy/quality) simply don't match.

I also agree with him on games not supporting it.
