Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation is getting Vulkan Support

Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation was one of the first games to showcase Direct X 12 and used by AMD to advertise the Radeon RX 480. It is now being updated with Vulkan support.

 

This is big news as this is a popular game used by CPU & GPU reviewers (and of course RTS Players :P) .

 

There's also a whole load of other changes in the upcoming update:

  • UI — A full menu reworking makes the game more accessible with new orbital ability icons, improved chat displays, and more.
  • Campaign and scenarios — Several scenarios and all three campaigns have been updated to refine difficulty levels, adjust to the changes of previous updates, and improve the user experience.
  • Modding — Modders have access to more parts of the game and will benefit from several changes that make modding more intuitive.
  • Balance — Changes to air units, anti-air, drones, and dreadnoughts will improve strategic diversity. The Substrate receives some additional changes in order to differentiate themselves from the PHC.
  • Vulkan support — This graphics-rendering API offers enhanced OS compatibility and performance.
  • Updated benchmark — The benchmark has been updated so that players can see how well their PC runs under Vulkan.

 

Overall, not a bad update. Vulkan support on newer titles is a nice addition as it brings both performance and possibly a hint that it could be coming to Linux although I'm not too sure about the latter.

 

I think that games should be looking to use Vulkan instead of DX11 or DX12  due to the ability to support Linux as a platform as newer engines support Vulkan. The real issue is mostly with games that use proprietary game engines such as EA's Frostbite, Ubisoft's AnvilNext 2.0 (An engine which could definitely benefit from Vulkan support) and other proprietary engines.

I didn't originally think about this but an influx of Vulkan titles could greatly benefit Radeon Technologies Group due to Nvidia not having their Gameworks Tools available for Vulkan. If you've noticed that some DX12 games heavily favor Nvidia regardless of it's DX12 support, now you know why. Nvidia's Gameworks can typically cause significant performance issues in games for both Nvidia and AMD users depending on the game. This is because Nvidia attempts to sabotage the performance of older GPUs in newer titles as they no longer really consider AMD to be a serious competitor and are mostly interested in forcing their own customers to upgrade to a newer GPU.

 

The use of Vulkan could potentially see fewer Gameworks titles in the short term as Nvidia may take some time to create a Gameworks Toolkit for Vulkan and even so, Developers should choose to avoid Gameworks as a programme.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

GIMPworks should not be used by devs in the first place, it's terrible for what it offers when you factor the performance loss/visual quality trade-off, it's just unproportional.

A great example of that was HairWorks in The Witcher 3, which caused a huge performance decrease and Geralt's hair looked like noodles with it turned on.

 

I can't wait to see which low-level API will be better in AotS and how will it perform on GTX and Radeon cards relatively to other APIs.

I can't wait to see which low-level API will be better in AotS and how will it perform on GTX and Radeon cards relatively to other APIs.

The issue is that Nvidia tried to use it as a marketing thing, because The Witcher 3 was a very successful title and sold a lot of copies so they could stick their logo next to the game title. And for what, for noodle-hair that halved your performance, even on their own GPUs? I don't see how that's NOT an issue for a conscious customer ^_^ Besides, look at what Gameworks is:

I've never seen anyone play Ashes of the Singularity outside of using it as an arbitrary benchmark. In all my time being here, I've never seen threads besides news related to it. Why do we even care about AotS?

I do need to give the Devs credit. Ashes of the Benchmark can make them a consistent return on the game for a long while, then sell licenses of the engine. If they can handle DX11, DX12 & Vulkan from the same core engine, that's actually pretty valuable.

Great engine that can tax more than 4 CPU cores. Not a lot of games can do that, so it adds some valuable information in "forward casting" development.

Looking at likely total sale numbers, I actually think the publisher made a solid return on the game. If they can license the core engine parts, they'll make a lot more off the project.

It's a niche game but it still has an audience.

I play it. Not every day since I'm usually too lazy to boot into Windows, but on a pretty regular basis.

 

It's taken over for Supreme Commander 1/FA/2 for me, since those games are kinda broken on Windows 10.

Just wanted to post a quick set of results with Vulkan. 2.40 is available as opt-in as of yesterday with it launching fully on the 24th, so I opted in and grabbed some quick benchmarks for DX11, 12, and Vulkan. All values taken with Nvidia Driver 385.28 on a Titan X (Pascal) and 7700K, so not the most representative setup but it's all I have handy atm. All results tested on Crazy defaults. Know this isn't the best sample, I just wanted to take a quick peek at how their Vulkan implementation is stacking up atm.

I don't have much experience benching Ashes so I'm not sure if 4K having such a close frame rate to FHD is normal for the benchmark on Crazy. It seems odd to me, but maybe Nvidia's DSR is messing with stuff.

 

Before people start going "WTF vulkan??? Y U Suck?" Keep in mind:

A) I didn't have the best testing methodology and could have fucked something up. I normally play this game, not benchmark it.

B) This is an early implementation of it. They've already said there's optimization work to be done. This is basically just the "We got it functional" milestone.

 

It's interesting to see an un-optimized Vulkan implementation nearly on par with DX12 at FHD. This is where we should see Vulkan stretch it's legs, and we certainly do. At both 4K and FHD Vulkan also edged out the DX12 CPU test which is great to see. I ran all four of the CPU tests like 5 times just to validate and every time Vulkan was consistently higher.  If you have the game in your steam libraries run the bench on both APIs and look at the driver overhead graph for both, Vulkan's is waaaaaaaaaay lower than DX12, at least on my Nvidia drivers.

 

At 4K I'm not sure why the Vulkan frame rate is so gibbled compared to my DX11/12 Scores. I'd chock it up to either the lack of optimization rearing it's ugly head, or DSR screwing with the game.

The Vulkan renderer is still in beta and under development.

 

But still it seems like there is something wrong with Nvidia's current Vulkan driver especially at higher resolutions
