WDC Blue vs Red

Hello!

So I've finalized my network setup and plan to use my own Windows 10 gaming rig as also a 24/7 SMB media server for an AndroidTV box.

Now I'm trying to decide the HD I will be buying. IIRC Reds are preferred for 24/7 operations but when I checked, the prices of Reds are almost 1.5x of Blues.

So now I'd like to get your opinion if I can use a WDC Blue instead. Or if you have other recommendations.

I only need about 2-3TB worth of storage so I'm not considering to do a RAID.

Media will mostly be downloaded (*wink*) stuff so IMO backup is not necessary. I can just redownload

EDIT: I'm not considering building another rig specifically for server purposes as I current don't have the funds to do so. I only have money for a router and an HDD. Anyways, the electricity bill is basically free so powerdraw is NOT an issue.

I would go neither as you'll be feeding power to your gaming rig when you're only using the NAS functionality of it.

RED gets my vote.

I don't get it. I'll still be using it for gaming though. Sort of a 2 birds one stone kind of thing.

Your growing porn collection aside, if you're going to leave it on 24/7 without giving the HDDs a break, keeping them spun up for eternity means you'll want long life, which the WD Reds are designed for. Not sheer speed, or throughput, but for reliability.

That's a waste of power as you'll be powering your GPU, audio, and whatever else is in the system for no benefit. I'd advise you to finish your server, set a VM on it for your "downloads", and call it a day.

Wait aren't they going to spindown when they're not being accessed (e.g. no porn downloads, no stream to AndroidTV).

I may have exaggerated. What I meant to say was that the rig will be on 24/7 but I would assume the HDDs will only be accessed at certain times (during DLs, and streaming to the AndroidTV)

but building another rig costs way too much. I only have money for a router and an HDD.

At the moment, the electricity bill is not an issue as it's basically free. Utilities are already inclusive in my rent.

24/7 SMB media server

do you really need 24/7 *wink* running on your tv?

If you do not need your TV running 24/7, just turn it on when you need it; Blue does the job here.

If you really want your TV running 24/7 then get the red as it will last longer, look at the warranty length, this is worth paying extra for if you need that 24/7 use.

about this, I don't really need NEED 24/7 running on the TV as obviously, we don't watch 24/7. but I'm trying to avoid the occasional "wait I have to turn on my PC first before I can watch stuff on my TV". Basically I just want the server readily available, anytime. Additionally, the gaming rig will be in my room and the TV will be in the living room. I keep the room locked when I'm not there so I have to keep it on so other people in the house can access the media server

WD is making new green ssd so I wouldn't say it's dead just the hard drive counter part

Hard Drive is what OP wants (unless Green SSDs come in 2TB capacity ?).
So... Green is still very much dead (in this use case).

"EZEX" is short name for WD Caviar Blue 1TB 3,5 (WD10EZEX).
Why any other isn't "good" ?
New Blue series models are all 5400RPM :(
EZEX model has 7200 RPM :)
WD5000AAKX is 7200RPM as well, but that's 500GB (capacity which is pointless at this point).
