Though I'd love to hear what desktop build you'd recommend.

something like this

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3LsjFd

- try to find a used 980ti

- get a x370 board if you plan on SLI

its really simple,

just use this as an example, it shouldn't take you more than an hour.

Hello, I am doing a final run as to what's best in the market and see what people recommend for a back to school laptop. It's going to be my main computer as well so I need something that can game/record but not be a heavy as an building when I want to drag it around. The following excel sheet attached has what I have looked at so far and what people recommended me. The highlighted one is the one I am leaning towards, which is an:

  • MSI GS63VR STEALTH PRO [ $1,349.99]
    •  CPU: i7-6700HQ @ 2.6GHz
    • 16 GB RAM
    • GPU: GTX 1060 6GB
    • 4 USB PORTS:
      • 1 THUNDERBOLT
      • 3 USB 3.0
    • 15.6 IPS SCREEN

This is the price range I'd like to stick to, lower would be better. Also I have a couple other questions I'd like answers to. Firstly I am guessing there isn't much difference between i7-6700HQ and i7-7700HQ? How important is VRAM, is there a large performance difference between different amounts?

need more info, what are you doing in Quantum mechanics? what are you doing your masters on? go for something like an XPS 15, you won't need much processing power, just practice math, and physics.

No the programs I am using are not going to be that extensive, we have supercomputing time for that. I just wanted an all rounder that I can game on but also be able to take to school.

Those are light but i don't think it will handle the games I want to throw at it, nor do I think it will be able to record and play at the same time. Why do I want to avoid "gaming" laptops?

-shitty thermal design

- doesn't look professional

-won't last long

-too heavy to carried around everywhere

- bad battery life

I see, I was going off of what people were recommending and the general consensus was a gaming laptop. I was planning on building a desktop during the summer and keep my laptop I have now but I don't have time to build and debug any problems should I build one (it would be my first build), and I don't think it would fit my budget. The reason I plan on gaming is because it is something I do when I am not studying. Though I'd love to hear what desktop build you'd recommend.
