Can't decide on 450w or 600w!

tote258

Hi Guys. This is my build.

CPU : Intel - Core i5-7500 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor

CPU Cooler : CRYORIG - C7 40.5 CFM CPU Cooler

Case : Realan T3-J1900T1-HTPC itx Case

Motherboard : MSI - H110I PRO AC Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard

Memory : Kingston - FURY 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory

Storage : Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 2.5" SSD 250GB + 500GB

I will be adding 2 120mm fan.

Not sure to get Silverstone - 450W 80+ Bronze Certified SFX Power Supply or 600W.

Please advice :)

What is your GPU? As of right now I would go with the 450W (but go with SeaSonic instead of Silverstone) but it depends on your GPU. If you get something real beefy you may want a little extra power.

Okay, I'm going to be lazy, and tell you to do some stuff yourself. Add up the total max power draw for all the components (under normal load, if your're going to mess around with power settings after that it gets messy) Then pull the spec sheet on the two power supplies you're considering. What you're looking for is the efficency curve. This varies depending on what power supply you use, and if the manufacturer doesn't supply it then places like JohnnyGuru do if they been able to get their hands on a sample. If you can't find the curve, then most power supplies hit peak efficency at 70-80% of their total load.

You did not not mention your graphic card ?  Always is better to have more W so it works with 50%-60% max, make last longer.

IF you do not plan to add graphic card then 450W will be more then enough, but for future upgrade 650W is better choise.

If you don't even have a graphics card, then 450w is enough. Even a GTX 1060 will run fine with a 450w PSU

450W is enough, however the Silverstone Bronze SFX is a mediocre PSU. I strongly advise you to go for something better like Silverstone Gold SFX or Corsair SF

Also a few critics:

1. The C7 cooler isn't a lot better than the stock cooler

2. Why get an i5 CPU

Not really, but that's the area a PSU is used best up to -> ~80%

Peak Efficiency is normally somewhere between 30 and 60%. And it tends to be on the lower end with the newest generation of PSU...

Anyway: 450W. More than enough without OC...

PS: If you haven't gotten it, don't!
Either get AMD or wait a couple of weeks for the new i5/i7 wich will give you two additional cores. And possibly cost the same!

as are all SFX PSU because of size restrictions it's not possible/viable to make a PSU with awesome performance. A similar ATX unit will always be far superior.

Here a Review:

Seems good to me.

And it doesn't seem to have a semi fanless option wich is definately a plus for a SFF PSU...

Especially since on some other units users report that the fan starts and stopps constantly...

Not really.

Has Problems with fan controller, due to semifanless Mode...

this should help you out & good enough for future incase you want to add gtx 1060 or equivalent graphics card to your system :)

First it's not SFX, but we are talking about SFX PSU. So it doesn't fit.

Second:

It's ancient...
There are better options for that Price!

The S12II/M12II is ancient and thus should NOT be reccomended at all. And it's rather loud. Has no OCP on any rail, only OPP, UVP on +5V and 3,3V is rather useless at 3,5/2,2V. And on +12V it's just not there.

In Short: It's not worth it, there are way better options from the competiton.

And why should one buy THAT?!

Just because there is a certain name on it, doesn't automatically make something good...

I would maybe go with an 850w, granted wouldn't do dual cards with that but at least will give you some headroom.

Otherwise 600w.

Are you going to put a dGPU in your system? If not then get a 450W. That'll be more than triple what your entire system will use.
