It's hard to tell on this forum sometimes.  Especially when most on this forum can only scale things while thinking 'consumer desktop PC' as the metric.  Most on this forum would probably be aghast that the Space Shuttle was largely powered by 486s... And that was AFTER it got the glass cockpit upgrade. :P

yes, sometimes things contradict with each other. This happens more often between sequels of a fiction. Also movies based on them are especially prone to this,.

I'm confused about the independent part making those tasks terrible for GPUs, when GPUs love highly independent tasks to fill their execution units. Especially with GCN.

You mean they weren't when all the tech websites were saying New Horizons ran on the same CPU as the original PlayStation?

I honestly think that part of this experiment is because NASA is running out of places to find 386s to replace any of their existing dead ones on the ISS. ;)

I haven't visited a movie theatre for a long time. I can watch them with online media providers at home, and I prefer this since I want to stay with all my junk food.

I wonder if it has anything to do with extra-planetary habitation... Mars isn't exactly a hospitable place to host a LAN party...

Maybe I worded that poorly. My point was more that this isn't raw number crunching. It's a matter of monitoring lots of little subsystems and making real-time decisions based on them, and using those to direct other subsystems, and interrupting and polling those systems and so on. It's going to be a lot of sequential code with lots of branching and forking and jumping around that wouldn't scale out well within a given execution unit.

 

Independent tasks are good for a GPU to a point, but each of those independent tasks still have to have well threaded parallel workflows to take advantage of a GPU's resources.

So what you're saying is they're sending up a control computer and are somehow making this sound like a number crunching supercomputer like in the TOP500?

When did they say it's a number crunching system? o.O

 

In the official announcement didn't they say it was to assess the viability of replacing the aging MDM and CCM supercomputers with more modern hardware?

Different levels of radiation. Certain kinds of radiation that can cause a bitflips can penetrate kilometers of ground here on earth, much less the radiation shielding of the space station. With the amounts of solar radiation up there, there's serious worry that even traditional precautions (ECC memory, and error checking) won't be enough for modern compute systems to run mission critical systems, especially with off-the-shelf solutions.

They are still in the saftey of earth's magnetic field. While there is more radiation up there its not like they are taking it to moon or something. It will be interesting to see how it handles power.

Actually from the CNN article itself:

They're certainly advertising it as a number crunching system.

It's a control to see how smaller transistors handle space for future reference on how to shield them and so on. Spaceships that are going to go beyond the moon will have too high latency to earth for a lot of situations so powerful on board computers would help a bunch

It was hard to explain that:

  1.  Curiosity wasn't sent to mars just to take 'vacation photos' for the public.
  2. If they thought 3G connection was bad, think trying the speed connecting to another planet! Transferring 13MP photos would take forever! (Fun fact: According to NASA's website the connection speed directly to earth is 500-32,000 bps. And using the orbiter as a middleman/buffer, it takes ~20 hours to transfer 100-250 Megabits.)

My main rig I never finished. I was rolling down the road on my Harley, and got run over by a motorhome that ran a red light, so I never finished all the stuff I was going to do to it. At least not yet. I now owe my soul to the medical establishment.

Firstly, elsewhere in this thread, I quote exactly that number.

 

Secondly, do you understand that that power has to power EVERYTHING?  Oxygen filtration systems, water recycling, lighting, heating, navigation systems, communication systems, waste systems, all research and science experiments, EVERYTHING.  84-120KW is a lot when it comes to powering a house here on earth, but that's not a tremendous amount of power when we are talking about a 400 tonne space station.
