In terms of gaming performance Vega 56 trades blows with the GTX 1070 and Vega 64 does the same with the GTX 1080. The problem however is that Vega 56 draws more power than the GTX 1080 and a liquid cooled Vega 64 draws nearly twice the wattage of a 1080. The air-cooled Vega 64 also seems to throttle more than the other GPUs (56, 1070, 1080).

When it comes to noise levels, AMD seems to have tweaked their cooler (some say it's slightly larger) which results in better noise levels when compared to the Fury X, but still a bit louder under load than nVidia's Frontier Founder's Edition. Temperatures look to be marginally higher on the Vega 64 compared to the GTX 1080, but the Vega 56 seems to run cooler than the GTX 1070.

Basically, GTX 1080 has a slight advantage in terms of performance, but is a lot more efficient than the Vega 64. I guess AMD will sell a lot more Vega 56s than 64s anyway and that GPU actually looks good, having a slight edge when compared to the GTX 1070 (ignoring efficiency). Too bad it took AMD one full year to release these cards.

1080 = 184w

1080 SLI = 364w

Vega 64 = 334w

Poor Vega.

I don't get it, sometimes the 64 is only 15% ahead of the FuryX in DX12 performance. Seems a bit weak? I know it has a longer pipeline, but it makes me wonder what else is going on with it!

Looks like Vega56 is the one to get. Faster than the GTX 1070.

And power consumption is reasonable (although higher than Pascal).

This is a massive failure from amd. More than a year later and cant beat 1080. Volta is really close and amd has nothing to go against it untill atleast 2018 q4.

Vega56 looks good, competitive with 1070 (not faster exactly) Vega 64 looks like a flop, fails to beat 1080 and draws way more power

THOUGH, RX480 was initially slightly weaker than the 1060 at launch, but driver updates pushed it ahead overall. So V56 could improve within the next three to six months, but Volta....

I wouldn't say so. The Vega 56 looks to be compelling, beats the 1070 out the gate and when drivers and game engine aligns, gets close to 1080 (Battlefield and Dx12). And more importantly, it's MSRP is cheaper than the 1070. In traditional AMD style the price you pay is extra power consumption, but an extra ~80W for consistently better performance on the 56 vs. the 1070 isn't going to stop the 56 selling out, which it will.

Not exactly a flop but definitely not a win. I think Navi is when it will truly get interesting.

The 56 seems to be the ideal configuration for Vega's power balance, however it sucks to see that AMD still hasn't unlocked the OC tool.

Sooooooooo, all Vega 64s sold out on OCUK in well under an hour. They had over 1000 of them in stock, allegedly.

What do you mean? wattman is able to OC it. it does need some updates to make it less buggy. and 3rd party tools needs updates from the 3rd party developers not AMD.

Has anyone tried flashing Vega 56 yet?

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I cannot agree: I fully expect Volta@60 to be again about 120 watts TDP while performing at 1070/V56 levels and that could be here as early as holidays this years or early 2018 while Volta@70 will probably do 150ish TDP while beating V64 at a lower price.

AMD is thoroughly screwed.

Wow, just as fast as a 1080 and it only uses double the power, and only a year late. Another stellar release by AMD.

Slim chances, I think most reviewers were rushing to get the results for the stock GPUs. I'm sure, however, that it will only take a few days to find out how a flashed 56 performs.

Hmm. Really struggling here.

I've been Team Red since forever, and I've been driving a 2560 / 1440 non-freesync screen with a 2x CF 290x setup for a few years now. I've been planning this upgrade for well over a year: a single Vega (God I'm sick of CF!!) with a new screen, too: either 4k or 1440 ultrawide WITH freesync and HDR. I've been saving up for this and I have some money to blow.

Only, I'm not quite sure now.

Basically, I'm disappointed. I wanted AMD to sell me something a little more powerful than a 1080ti, not something struggling to keep up with a 1080.In fact, I'm tempted to give up, abandon AMD and go green. I could buy a 1080ti, and I'd have the Vega beat, hands down.

OTOH, those package deals!

If I get a bundle, not only do I avoid paying $200 MORE for a monitor with g-sync - I could actually get a $200 DISCOUNT on a really sweet 1440 Samsung ultrawide monitor with freesync and HDR.

So why am I even hesitating?

- Mostly because of 4k. I still think I'd like a 4k monitor better than 1440 ultrawide - and Vega just isn't going to cut it at 4k.

- Also because of OLED. That Samsung monitor they're offering in the bundle is pretty niuce - but it's quantum dot, not OLED. And, AFAIK, it's not real HDR.

Kind of think I'd do best to sit tight for another year and wait for REAL 4k OLED montors with freesync - and an AMD card that can drive them.

Some people complain about flickering on samsung freesync monitors btw.

Very interested in that question. My CF 290x rig is actually composed of two 290s that were bios flashed ...
