New Laptops: Zenbook Pro UX550 vs Vivobook Pro N580VD

UPDATE: Think i will test my luck with the new vivobook pro n580vd, it has all the specs i want and it's a brand new model so i hope the quality is good for 1400 eur.

UPDATE 2: read the vivobook review=nope.

What are your thoughts on these laptop models? They come in almost the same specs, the zenbook being a bit thinner and smaller but more expensive. Am i crazy if i put my money on the zenbook pro model with merely 8gb ram and 256gb ssd?

Vivobook: https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ASUS-VivoBook-Pro-15-N580VD/

Zenbook: https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ASUS-ZenBook-Pro-UX550VE/

In Sweden:

Zenbook: i7-7700HQ, 8GB DDR4, 1050Ti 4GB, 256GB Sata3 SSD @ 1650 eur

Vivobook: i7-7700HQ, 16GB DDR4, 1050 4GB, 512GB Sata3 SSD @ 1400 eur

Zenbook: i7-7700HQ, 16GB DDR4, 1050Ti 4GB, 512GB PCI-e SSD @ 2060 eur (way too expensive for me)
Zenbook: i7-7700HQ, 16GB DDR4, 1050Ti 4GB, 512GB Sata3/256GB PCI-e SSD (would be nice to know pricing for this if there is a model for it)

Zenbook dimensions (WxDxH): 365x251x18.9 (mm)

Vivobook dimensions (WxDxH): 380x256x19.2 (mm)

My thoughts at the moment (no reviews out)

Zenbook:

+ smaller chassis

+ chamfered edge

+ backlit logo on back

+ 1050Ti

+ comes in black or blue

+ smaller bezels

- 8GB RAM

- 256GB Sata3 (if it was PCI-e it would be fine)

- 1650 eur

Vivobook:

+ 16GB RAM

+ 512GB SSD

+ 1400 eur

- not as sexy as the zenbook

- from the looks of it, only champagne/golden color

- bigger screen bezels

Personally I'd go with the Zenbook.

Do you need color accuracy? The Zenbook covers 100% sRGB, the Vivobook only 72%.

The major difference that's worth every penny IMO, is the 73wAh battery in the Zenbook compared to the 47wAh in the Vivo.

Geomagic Design:

"Design Recommended Graphics Cards

Recommended: Dedicated (Non-Integrated) Graphics Card that meets the criteria below:

Video Card RAM: 512MB

Video Card Framework: Must support DirectX 9.0c or above and OpenGL 3.0 or above

Series: NVIDIA Quadro

Recommended: Dedicated (Non-Integrated) Graphics Card that meets the criteria below:

Video Card RAM: 2GB or More

Video Card Framework: Must support OpenGL 4.0 or above

Series: NVIDIA Quadro or NVIDIA GeForce

Notes:

If you use the AMD Radeon series, the panning or rotation in the application might not operate correctly. To solve this problem, uncheck the Use Custom Settings option under 3D > Standard Settings in the Catalyst Control Center dialog box and move the slider to the left.

It is recommended to set the anti-aliasing value lower than 8. Otherwise, detection of 3D edges may not work properly or there may be problems with panning or rotating within the application. If anti-aliasing is disabled, the edges and boundaries of shaded objects can be jagged if displayed at angles close to 0 or 90 degrees.

Recommended: Dedicated (Non-Integrated) Graphics Card that meets the criteria below:

Video Card RAM: 2GB or More

Video Card Framework: Must support OpenGL 4.0 or above

Series: NVIDIA Quadro

Notes: Using a non-recommended card may result in random crashing, graphical anomalies, or data corruption. Use of any non-recommended configuration at your own risk."

damn, didn't notice the sRGB value on the vivobook, that's a bummer. With that, the battery, the higher build quality and slightly smaller formfactor the price is starting to make sense. This is gonna end up with a hole in the wallet.

i'm working with quite heavy assemblies which gets me thinking that RAM will be starved at 8GB.

Perhaps, but would it even be in a comparable configuration? Highly unlikely. Feel free to prove me wrong.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I find laptops last a lot longer between refresh cycles than a desktop, especially since you're not gaming. I've had mine for almost 5 years and I only now am considering an upgrade, and it's more me wanting to buy something new than it not performing :P

not sure but if you see the specs of my current rig at home, it's struggling at some times to twist and move the model around in the assembly, now i don't expect to be working mostly on the laptop but i want to be able to have that choice when i'm on the go.

may be a gtx1060 or a quadro could be better options for big assemblies IMO

Actually they cover about the same amount of colors, the zenbook has a 99% sRGB value while the vivobook's color gamma is represented in NTSC which is covered in this article, and i'm quoting here

Quote

72% of NTSC is roughly equivalent to 100% of the sRGB color gamut.

The reason i'm looking at the vivobook and zenbook is that i want to get away from the "gaming" design and go for a more clean look, preferrably aluminum or magnesium.

thanks for pointing that review out, read that one and the one for vivobook and, to be frank, none of them feel fantastic. God why is it so difficult to choose a laptop model.
