Storage chassis for consumer hardware

Marco2G

Hi everyone

Does anyone know whether there's a chassis for 12 to 24 3.5 inch drives that takes consumer hardware (meaning ATX board and consumer power supply)?

I think I remember Linus having used something like that at one point but I am unsure.

I know Supermicro makes chassis for so many disks and the ATX standard isn't a problem but I wnt this to remain somewhat quiet so server PSUs are a real no-go...

Thanks for your input!

I had something like this one here:

https://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?p=CA-846BE9B

and was able to mod the server PSU parts out and install a regular ATX power supply.

Aside from that the other main point of noise was the fans. If you can find something with 92mm or 120mm fans that would be ideal.

Don't know yet. Only thing I know is that a Threadripper 1920X will be in it :).

And that's why I'm saying it needs to be somewhat quiet. It's in the attic next to the washing machine. I already have such a large chassis. Was a storage appliance before I replaced the custom Linux. Problem is cooling is really meant to be handled by really loud fans. I replaced them with quieter ones but whenever I push the dual Core2Quads to 100%, the temp sensor starts beeping like it's on fire :D.

It's possible I can mod this better but before I put in that work I just want to make sure that there isn't an affordable ready made solution.

Also to clarify, at the moment it only has 7 drives in it. This is meant to be future proof, that's why I want beyond 12 slots.

Dang, I remember the Lian-Li now and it does look interesting. At 400 € it actually seems rather affordable.

Thanks, this is indeed a candidate.

It came with four server power supplies that were trying to be louder than Man'o'War. Or a jackhammer, although I reckon they don't differ much on the decibels :D

Dude, thanks! That's exactly the case I had in mind and couldn't find anymore!

Only problem is that seems to be impossible to get in Europe... darn it ^^

If available:

Nanoxia Deep Silence 5 or 6. It can get 11, + has 3x5,25" bays

If not:
Cooler Master Storm Trooper. It has 9x5,25" you can use however you like. It comes with two 3x5,25" to 4x3,5" bays, but I don't see why you can not use an additional hot swap bay or something like that...

So you might want to get either a 3x5,25 to 4x3,5" Adaptor thingy or a hot swap bay...
