AMD finally providing good OpenGL Linux performance

In past years I have heavily criticized AMD for their lackluster openGL performance. This is an area that seldom affects Windows users where the primary graphics API is directX, but it has made powerful AMD hardware perform poorly on Linux where openGL is the primary graphics API. Vulkan is gathering steam with more games coming out for it on Linux than Windows but still openGL remains the majority on linux and it will be a couple of years until that changes.

 

On the Windows side it's been years since Nvidia lost their leadership crown with regard to graphics drivers. But AMD for a long time was still lagging on Linux.

 

Nvidia relies on the closed source proprietary Linux drivers to provide good gaming performance. This means they cannot ship with Linux distros and have to be installed manually.

AMD began years ago investing in open source drivers and that has recently been paying off heavily with them catching up to the Nvidia proprietary drivers and also providing a better out of the box Linux experience with better kernel and distro compatibility. The open source nature of this effort has also attracted contributions from others such as Valve.

So are things perfect for AMD on Linux? Not quite yet. To complete the picture they have to finish open sourcing their Vulkan driver and enable by default the new AMDGPU kernel driver for hardware back to GCN 1.0 which they have promised.

 

But when I got my R9 290 years ago nothing worked on Linux. It was so bad that it would stay in a low power state. Today it's a pleasure to use. RTG deserves kudos for the ongoing momentum and turning things around since taking over.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Still can't use the HD7600G inside my laptop's A8 under Linux properly though, so still not good news for me :(

OP hasn't said in his post, but I suspect the benchmarks are for the open source Linux driver, not the windows driver. None of this affects windows in any way AFAIK.

vulkan a bit like dx12 relies more on devs to do most of the work that opengl and dx11 do in the background, so its harder to code for

I always hated installing the Nvidia drivers in Linux. Glad there is still hope for amd

And it seems like open source nvidia drivers for Linux might be a dead end at this point. 9 and 10 series cards refuse to let non-signed drivers access the gpu boost functionality and some cards refuse to run non-signed drivers all together AFAIK

However there are many devs who would rather not deal with a low level graphics API either due to lack of resources, knowledge or time (as long as openGL performs well enough).

So it would seem they *could* merge MESA code with crimson code, but they would have to release crimson as MIT as well. Possibly, I'm not a lawyer.

vulkan does have an advantage on that side though because it supports middleware to help devs that dont need  the lower level access

Creating fast graphics drivers of this quality for high level APIs with this much abstraction is never a token concession. It's really a lot of manhours. It's a ridiculously complicated multi year effort.

 

AMD has won over the Linux community by embracing open source drivers over the previous catalyst, having the open source drivers surpass the previous catalyst drivers both in performance and stability, and continuously engaging with the community. I have been on the phoronix forums for the last few years and there are about 2-3 AMD Linux driver engineers who regularly post there and keep the community updated with what they are working on and what can be expected in future. Mind you these are not marketing folks, these are the actual people who do the grunt work. They even get into arguments with other users constantly on the forum over what work they are prioritizing and how long stuff take. But it's a level of openness and community engagement we have not seen from Intel and Nvidia.

 

Anyway yes the Linux gaming market share is small. People used to say AMD with limited resources would never and should never waste time on it. However I personally used to always give them shit about it because my opinion is that if you advertise your hardware as Linux compatible then you have a moral obligation to provide a fully working product. I thought otherwise they should not claim Linux support and they should say Windows only, then I would not complain.

 

Well anyway I gave them shit before... But now full credit to Raja Koduri with what he has done with the software stack here since creating Radeon Technology Group. I have watched online how RTG's new approach to Linux won over the community over the last few years. A community which previously said they had no choice but to use Nvidia. And the effort is not even over yet. Every month basically we hear of new improvements...

A number of production applications use OpenGL as well, Blender being quite popular among the hobbyist 3d community. It was only fairly recently that it was updated to OpenGL 2.1 actually. I think Vulkan will be a very long time off.
