Should I wait for Vega 64 or get a 1080 Ti

Cosmotis

I have just upgraded my PC. I have a Ryzen 1700x and a 750W PSU. For my GPU, I am using my old Rx 480 8GB from my last rig and looking for an upgrade. My plan has been to directly upgrade to a Vega 64 air. But with rumored prices already being way high (taking into consideration those "place holder prices") on the Vega cards, my next plan would be to sell my 480, (not expecting $700 from it but maybe at or above release-date msrp) and buy a 1080ti. Is this the most solid plan of action? Seeing as how Vega 64 is barely up to par with the 1080, if I sell my 480 at put that money toward a 1080ti, I'm effectively paying as much or less than Vega 64's msrp. P.S I'll be doing high/ultra settings gaming on 1440p 144hz.

go 1080 ti unless you have freesync.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

And make sure you do it by hitting the quote button at the bottom left of my post, and not the one inside the editor!

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Ultra settings in AAA games, taking advantage of high refresh rates. I'd like to move to 4k as well.

Did you factor in the same discount towards Vega? It doesn't really sound like you did...

Personally I'd go with the 1080Ti just because it performs better. It is quite a bit more though.

If you were to go for the Vega 64 I'd wait until the packs are gone. They're simply not worth it.

Hmmm odd. It's entirely possible, though if it isn't one of the bigger players I'd question if it's even worth it. Guess he's banking on it being the next one to take off? I've thought of doing that. But then I think about how I can invest that money into something else and do that instead.

1080ti at the moment... not convinced by vega's performance, given how many years they were "behind the hood" they should have at least overtaken the 1080ti if they wanted centerstage or made a difference

I'm only saying this is because in Australia prices are aggressively raised due to the "Aussie Tax"... and given vega being a new product its going to be aggressively priced too at an absurd amount. Whereas there were good deals on 1080ti lately so i jumped on it. best decision ever made, never looking back. in a way futureproofed. sure other cards will supercede it but im not the type to change every year, more like 6-10 years+ at the norm.

Yeah the more I think about getting a 1080ti, the more excited I get about it. I've always had a mid range PC, and this time around I want the best of the best for what I do. Lots of gaming and audio engineering. So I will most likely sell my 480 and get a 1080ti. I've heard about volta and stuff, idk if it'd lower the prices of previous gen but frankly I'm sick of "waiting for the next thing because it'll be better". The ti is still relevant and still at the top. I don't want to buy it and think "man I could've done a little better", and I don't think I will with the ti.

It's all about the Ice Wall bro.  Insanity copied from the Flat Earth Society's wiki below.  It has all of the coherence and clarity of thought you'd expect from people who think the earth is flat.

------------------------------------------------------

"The figure of 24,900 miles is the diameter of the known world; the area which the light from the sun affects. Along the edge of our local area exists a massive 150 foot Ice Wall. The 150 foot Ice Wall is on the coast of Antarctica. The Ice Wall is a massive wall of ice that surrounds Antarctica. The shelf of ice is several hundred meters thick. This nearly vertical ice front to the open sea is more than 50 meters high above the water's surface.

The Ice Wall was discovered by Sir James Clark Ross, a British Naval Officer and polar explorer who was among the first to venture to Antarctica in an attempt to determine the position of the South Magnetic Pole.

Beyond the 150 foot Ice Wall is anyone's guess. How far the ice extends; how it terminates; and what exists beyond it, are questions to which no present human experience can reply. All we at present know is, that snow and hail, howling winds, and indescribable storms and hurricanes prevail; and that in every direction "human ingress is barred by unsealed escarpments of perpetual ice," extending farther than eye or telescope can penetrate, and becoming lost in gloom and darkness. Some hold that the tundra of ice and snow stretches forever eternally.

The Ice Wall is a natural formation, a thick mass of floating ice that is attached to land, formed from and fed by tongues of glaciers extending outward from deep within the uncharted tundra into sheltered waters. Where there are no strong currents, the ice becomes partly grounded on the sea bottom and attaches itself to rocks and islands. The wall is pushed forward into the sea by glacial pressure until its forward growth is terminated.

The entire coast of the Ice Wall is not one single complete wall, however. There are actually a series of thousand mile long walls, divided by Transantarctic Mountain Ranges up to 11,500 feet high. The weight of The Ice Walls are so enormous that they have literally pressed the land two thirds of a mile (one kilometer) into the earth. Under the massive forces of their own weight, the ice walls deform and drag themselves outward. Very large glaciers called ice streams flow through them continually, transporting ice from deep inland out to the sea.

Temperatures are thought to approach absolute zero the further one explores outwards. Exploration in this type of pitch black freezing environment is impossible for any man or machine. We live on a vast plane with an unknown diameter and an unknown depth. Dr. Samuel Birley Rowbotham held that knowing the true dimensions of the earth is something which will forever be unknowable by man."

The Ti will outperform Vega 64 by a landslide. Hell, even the 1080 will. The real sweet spot for Vega is the Vega 56 which uses a heck of a lot less power while only giving in like 5% of the performance. That puts it well above the 1070 and even into 1080 territory. But don't think AMD will have anything with Vega that competes with a Titan or 1080Ti. If they want to do that they'd have to move into the 96CU/6144SP territory making yields almost non-existent for such massive dies and it would probably need a nuclear power plant to power it.

from my experience vega can actually match the 1080 ti or titan depending on the graphics settings. Because of less ROPs AA is not vega; strong suit but if you take out AA (excluding FXAA) it performs just as well.

I did test it but it was not a good test though. On watchdogs 2 the titan xp does not maintain 1080p 60 fps with extra geometry turned on fully but both cards achieve a similar fps with extra geometry (AMD's higher FLOPS count helps here). But with AA the card struggles.

In general the card is slower than a 1080 ti but your choice should be dependent on price, monitor and needs. 1080 TI has 11GB of vram, vega 64 has 8GB of faster vram and it does need the vram bandwidth. Overclocking the vram on vega fe yields significantly more performance and AMD lets you overvolt the vram too.

nope, not by a landslide. Higher ROP count is the TI's advantage otherwise if you use fxaa the TI isnt much faster than vega. ROP count matters for AA performance.
