Paris is considering eSports for the 2024 Olympics

My first thought is this really blows up the boundaries to what is a sport and what isn't. However I'm still hesitant to include it in the Olympics. Plus other people brought up good points such as:

• Olympic games do not necessarily require a commercial product to do. Using an eSports game does require a commercial product and so it would be a huge advertisement for said product.
• It's a barrier for some countries who can't afford a computer to play said games and may not have a robust enough internet infrastructure. Though while it's easy to scoff at this argument in going "well the equipment they use at the games probably cost more than my machine", a lot of people can build up their athletic skills without the expensive, top-of-the-line equipment.
  • EDIT: Also companies give athletes the equipment as part of being a sponsor.
• It could open up the argument for other competitive games that are not generally considered "sports" to be included, like I dunno, chess. Or even some that are considered sports but are never part of the Olympics, like car racing.
• There's already too many effing games.

While I don't quite agree mixing the two "types of sports" together this would certainly be a new breath of life to the quite depressing money wasting olympics of nowadays.

Great point, never thought of that. You'd basically be giving LoL or DOTA 2 or CS:GO or whatever a massive, worldwide, free ad campaign. It wouldn't be fair to all the other game makers.

Exports are actual sports by definition but people are salty.

too much room for hardware errors or latency, because you KNOW these competitors will scream foul over 1ms lag.

Maybe they could make it a game from a company that no longer exists...  

 

Of course another question would be whether they make different events for console and PC or for different genres of games.  

 

Seems poorly thought out as there are way too many technical and legal hurdles that that they would have to make it over.

I don't really watch Summer Olympics much, I'm a winter Olympics fan. I love hockey.... However, any video hockey game lacks the tense moments you get off a real sport.

 

I think adding a Formula Race would be better use of adding sports to the Olympics rather than anything graphically rendered.

 

 

 

Also.. it's wired that people would rather watch a bunch of nerds on PCs play StarCraft or LL, or CSGO against each other than anything else...

Oh, two more points to add:

• You can't call it "eSports" and leave it at that. You'd have to name a specific game. And then you make a lot of people mad if you only include one game.
• Most of the eSports games may be considered objectionable to some countries. Yes there are full-contact sports in the Olympics, but none where the goal is basically "kill the other person"

well it would be on a LAN so I don't see how lag would be a issue. take a look at Riot Games setup or ESL. they use onsite servers and validate competitors hardware (keyboard mouse).

 

Riot also has judges for when bugs happen in game, to decide if it is a issue and if the game needs to be restarted or even disable the use of something.

Maybe they'll end up doing something like FIFA 2024 or whatever it is called by then...  Problem they'll run across is that they'll be limiting the 'player' (athlete???) base by limiting which games they allow in the event.

That would suggest Overwatch is going to exist by 2024, and considering Blizzard's reluctance to change their balance philosophy or deal with community issues, I doubt it would.

I just can't get into it. It's like ... you have gold medals being given to track and field competitors, and then gold medals to people pretending to be track and field competitors.

Please no. The Olympics is for seeing people do amazing physical things, not people fucking winning CSGO. As cool as that is, I don't want to see it at the Olympics. Okay, make it a major thing, but that's not Olympic.

I have mix feelings, I think it is a cool idea for exposure and as a gamer I like it.

 

But I also think it is not needed, ESL and Riot Games tournaments are very big, and MLG is also still doing well. I think its fine it is its separate thing.

 

Honestly I feel Riot Games has moved the esports industry and made great strides in making it a solid spectator "sport" (I don't know what work to use)
