This doesn't even begin to get into the issue that even if you have a mobile data plan with 10 down, 1 up, after a certain amount of usage they will throttle your connection to a lot less...  As it is, I feel lucky enough to be in an area where I can get 1 Gbps down, 50 Mbps up with 1 TB of data for only about twice ($175/month) what most mobile carriers would charge for a 22 GB plan...

He gets to appoint people. How the fuck do you think the new commissioner got his job? Pretty much all federal agencies the president appoints people to them, he has to get approval from Congress. Which is majority republican which means they rubber stamp most of this shit.

Did he actually put the guy in that position, or is he just a carry over? Does seem a moron, if he thinks everyone wants slow internet. We should be pushing for gigabit everywhere, especially as more businesses move to cloud storage and applications (and businesses keep the economy, and thus the government, alive).

So, basically, nothing changed in the real world, except now some people are bitching. In Idaho, there was a 'mobile' based internet provider that cost under $20 with no contract or rental fees, they died to providers where the cheapeat plans at the time were over $50, in contract, with minimum $10 rental fees.

Here in Australia we are having a different kind of wireless rolled out in our regional areas.

At first they promised as only 25/5, but after tests and implementation, and low population in the regional areas, we are seeing 50/20 on wireless.

It's more like a beaming service rather than 4g/5g.

 

There are towers every few milometers and then you have a small dish/tower pointed to your closest main tower.

If you have a look on the NBN's map to the west of Toowoomba, QLD you can clearly see how it saturates the countryside.

Mobile providers have been using every excuse in the book to justify high prices and low connection speeds and other problems, and now they're gonna start throwing all the home traffic which could easily be 100x or more per month onto that network as well?

Is there a way that it can be done without sucking? (ignoring the inevitable datacaps for the moment). As in:

 

It's faster than 10/1

It's got a low enough ping time that you can game on it

 

Is it technologically possible? Even if it is unlikely because they're a bunch of greedy bastards that will invest in infrastructure once and expect it to last forever.

1. the backbone still has to reach cell towers. This more effects node to premise infrastructure. Which is indeed a headache and a half getting it rolled out. So this may well spur better saturation in rural areas by default as cell providers need backbone infrastructure to provide that speed in those areas.

 

2. Allowing cellular networks to qualify as broadband home provision spurs MORE competition which will hopefully spur better investment by hardline providers. Rural areas have a hard time as it is drawing competing providers compared to urban and suburban areas.

 

3. Data caps are an issue in general, not just for cellular. Most currently available mobile home internet service already has competitive data caps to hardline

 

4. Cellular is already available around much of the nation, usually competitive with price and data limits to established hardline providers. Often it's BETTER than hardline. I have clients that have issues with cable or DSL and switch to mobile which is similar speeds for a better price with no dropouts in signal.

 

Don't forget they classify broadband provision as 10Mbps down and 1 Up. That level of infrastructure has to be available for it to qualify. And this is to spur improvements in rural areas, which have an even harder time getting competing. And there are plenty of areas that cannot get that speed even with DSL because the established corporatocracy has preferential regulatory treatment and can keep a captive market on stupid slow 6Mbps down and 768Kbps up.

You can now in areas with newer infrastructure. There are people in urban areas already using mobile for home internet for all that. You can get 25 down 5 up from most major providers in big cities. and depending on the provider ping CAN be as low as 20-30.

Tom Wheeler was the previous Chairman during the Obama years. He was replaced by the current guy. Tom Wheeler was consumer friendly. He was going to make cable providers allow us to buy cable boxes. Hes also the one who got Net Neutrality going. So yeah, Trump appointed the new idiot.

I live in a ghetto area, so our infrastructure isn't great, and you can tell because my download was just tested at 1.5, should be over 10, and my upload was 8.5. 5 times my DL. my ping was 35ms. perfectly passable for home use. if we had better provision from ATT. TMobile and Verizon are pretty good around here though.
