FCC determining US IPs don't have to provide hardline?

In an article posted on Ars Technica, it is suggested that the FCC may be looking at doing away with the requirements in the US for people to be able to receive internet via hard line (cable, fiber, etc.) since they can receive it instead with mobile data services.  The argument that is being made is that Mobile Internet at 10 Mbps up, 1Mbps down, is more than sufficient for what anyone needs for their home internet service.  I'm kind of left speechless by this myself as this will cripple the deployment of true high speed internet within the US.

The suggestion comes in the FCC's annual inquiry into broadband availability. Section 706 of the Telecommunications Act requires the FCC to determine whether broadband (or more formally, "advanced telecommunications capability") is being deployed to all Americans in a reasonable and timely fashion. If the FCC finds that broadband isn't being deployed quickly enough to everyone, it is required by law to "take immediate action to accelerate deployment of such capability by removing barriers to infrastructure investment and by promoting competition in the telecommunications market."


The FCC found during George W. Bush's presidency that fast Internet service was being deployed in a reasonable and timely fashion. But during the Obama administration, the FCC determined repeatedly that broadband isn't reaching Americans fast enough, pointing in particular to lagging deployment in rural areas. These analyses did not consider mobile broadband to be a full replacement for a home (or "fixed") Internet connection via cable, fiber, or some other technology.

 

Last year, the FCC updated its analysis with a conclusion that Americans need home and mobile access. Because home Internet connections and smartphones have different capabilities and limitations, Americans should have access to both instead of just one or the other, the FCC concluded under then-Chairman Tom Wheeler.

 

But with Republican Ajit Pai now in charge, the FCC seems poised to change that policy by declaring that mobile broadband with speeds of 10Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream is all one needs. In doing so, the FCC could conclude that broadband is already being deployed to all Americans in a reasonable and timely fashion, and thus the organization would take fewer steps to promote deployment and competition.


This would also be the first time that the FCC has set a broadband speed standard for mobile; at 10Mbps/1Mbps, it would be less than half as fast as the FCC's home broadband speed standard of 25Mbps/3Mbps.

 

Although the FCC might conclude that mobile broadband can replace a cable or fiber connection, the commission also says consumers can't expect mobile to be as fast. "We anticipate that any speed benchmark we set [for mobile] would be lower than the 25Mbps/3Mbps benchmark adopted for fixed broadband services, given differing capabilities of mobile broadband," the FCC said.

 

The changes were signaled yesterday in a Notice of Inquiry, the FCC's first step toward completing a new analysis of broadband deployment. The document asks the public for comments on a variety of questions, including whether mobile broadband can substitute for fixed Internet connections. You can file comments at this link; initial comments are due September 7, and reply comments are due September 22.

This doesn't even begin to get into the issue that even if you have a mobile data plan with 10 down, 1 up, after a certain amount of usage they will throttle your connection to a lot less...  As it is, I feel lucky enough to be in an area where I can get 1 Gbps down, 50 Mbps up with 1 TB of data for only about twice ($175/month) what most mobile carriers would charge for a 22 GB plan...

And if they go this route they'll be asking in a couple years why the US is so far behind in everyone else technologically.

But in the land of Pai, you don't need more than 4 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up...  I mean, why would you even want to stream any video at above 240p?  /S  

 

Can we PLEASE get someone running the FCC that is forward thinking in regards to technology and connectivity?

Who would ever need to video conference? Why would you want to send and receive files at the same time? Who will ever need to work from home or remotely?

Why would you want to stop your ISP from dictating what sites you can and cannot visit without paying more?

Such strange concepts *rage*

 

Maybe we should force the people and their families who propose this bullcrap to deal with it themselves for a year.

I get 100/10 with 723TB(unlimited according to rogers) of data a month for only 70 Canadian Snow Dollars. Now cell phones, dont even get me started. 2gb of data starts at 90 a month...

Lol, they already have phones with X16 LTE(1Gbps) support, but I guess that doesn't matter since 10mbps is as much as we need.

How about those peeps come out to the country side and try using a mobile carrier for Internet inside a building.  It is crap.  Also, the price of mobile data is stupid expensive.  There is a reason I went with satellite over mobile since that was the best option of three I had price wise to speed and data cap(the other being dail-up).

Just ran a 'speed test' on my phone and it's showing a 100 ms latency with 3 Mbps up and 3 Mbps down on the AT&T 4G LTE network that I'm connected to, so I guess by the FCC standard, I don't have that mobile service, however, hooked up to WiFi at home, I get a 18 ms Ping Latency with 74 Mbps down and 27 Mbps up on my phone...  

 

Also, while the FCC has the whole data speed standards, they don't consider latencies as a part of your connection...

I dunno, I've had some extremely solid internet connectivity with my phone in places that have complete garbage internet. Aren't cell towers supposed to have gigabit with 5G or something like that soon (at least eventually) too? That'll only be useful for city people, as usual, but maybe one day it'll be as fast and reliable as cable, and we all know TimeWarner has a ridiculous amount of outages already

 

Still there needs to be a crackdown on internet companies that are the only ones in a particular area. Stopping these legal monopolies would go further than any government change

I work at an ISP and someone from my sales (older) said why do people need more than 6mbps. I lost my shit, set their home connection from 60/10 to 6/1 and I got a phone call in an hour saying they cant take it and they dont do that much on it. Just to show them how dumb their statement was.

 

Minimum of 30/5 for everyone or get the fuck out.
