Advice on a NAS

Right this is what i am thinking now let me know if i am going mad but this is my current setup; 

 

HP Proliant N54L

  • Processor: Dual Core AMD Turion™ II Neo N54L (2.2GHz) - AMD RS785E/SB820M chipset
  • Memory: 4GB 10600E DDR3 ECC Two (2) DIMM slots o 4GB (1x4GB) PC3-10600E DDR3 Unbuffered (UDIMM) ECC memory, operating at max. 800MHz
  • Storage: 4 x 6tb WD Red ( JBOD )
  • Storage Controller: Embedded AMD SATA controller with RAID 0, 1 - Embedded AMD eSATA controller for connecting external storage devices via the eSATA connector in the rear of the server.
  • Interfaces;

Graphics On board VGA ( 128MB shared supporting 1920x1200 @ 60Hz )

USB 2.0 Ports 7 total (2 rear, 4 front panel, 1 internal)

1x Network RJ-45 (Ethernet) 1 (10/100/1000 bits/s)

1x eSATA Gen 2

  • Network Controller: Embedded NC107i PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Server Adapter. 
  • Expansion Slots: Slot 1: PCI-Express Gen 2 x16 connector with x16 link  
  • Slot 2: PCI-Express Gen 2 x1 connector with x1 Link o
  • Slot 2-2: PCI-Express x4 slot for optional management card USB 2.0 Ports: o Seven (7) USB 2.0 ports: 4 front , 2 rear, 1 internal (for tape)
  • Power Supply: 150 Watts Non-Hot Plug, Non Redundant Power Supply
  • Operating System: Xpenology - but supports Windows and Red Hat Linux
  • Form Factor: Ultra Micro tower

this is what i am thinking,

  • Processor: Dual CPU - Intel Xeon x5650 2.66ghz
  • Memory: 24gb PC3-10600R DDR3 1333MHz ECC (6x4GB) - 12 x DIMM Slots DDR3 RAM
  • Storage: 8 x 6tb WD Red ( Raid 5 )
  • Storage Controller: Smart Array P410i Integrated RAID Controller with 512MB battery backed cache
  • Interfaces:
  • Network Controller: Two HP NC382i Dual Port Multifunction 1Gbps Server Adapters (4 x Ports)
  • Expansion Slots: 
  • Power Supply: Dual Redundant Power Supplies (2xPSU)
  • Operating System: Unsure atm Windows server I think advice would be great
  • Form Factor: HP ProLiant DL380 G7 Server Chassis ( 8 Bay ) no sold on this but would like 8 bays

I want it to be a NAS run a Plex server, 1080p 2x streams with maybe an option for 4k in the future, what you guys think I also have this idea of playing around with VM's thanks for the help

have you trialled rebuilding a raid5? the recommendation is dont do raid5 above 2TB drives and i agree with this.

Nope I haven't, I currently run JBOD and have done for a while i just feel like some redundancy wouldn't go a miss but nothing on my server will be un-replaceable

how about HP ProLiant DL380?

 

EDIT: never mind only has 2.5inch drive bays
