Threadripper or i9?

Im in desperate need to upgrade my hardware :| currently im running an AMD FX-6100 CPU which was ok when i made it like 6 years ago.

I made it for my work but recently its started holding me back.

Im a 3D character/Creature artist and game Designer but i work from home most the time so my hardware is REALLY important.

I know Threadripper isnt fully out yet and Benchmarks are only really starting to surface but if im honest i just want a second opinion.

I know Intel tends to not update their workstation sockets often so i feel an i9 would be a good move for me, However AMD rarely changes their sockets.

From what i can tell Threadripper will be a more stable future safe platform for me to move on.

Price really isnt an issue for me because of Tax deduction.

Anyways, opinions on Threadripper or i9's?

Threadripper is going to be the better value. Also the i9 cpus that will actually compete with top end threadripper aren't even out yet so it would be hard to tell who is going to be the performance king and by how much until both are released.

I personally would go with Threadripper, it should be better then the 12c i9 at a lower cost and being out sooner.

I´m an intelfan myself, but to be fair, Threadripper is looking like the better choice

Case: Corsair Graphite 760T || PSU: Corsair RM650i || Mobo: Asus RoG Strix Z270E || CPU: Intel i5-7600K @4.8GHz || Cooler: Corsair H110i v2 || RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz 16GB White LED || GPU: MSI GTX 1070 8GB GAMING X || SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB, Samsung 860 Evo 500GB, Samsung MZ1280 M.2 128GB || HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB

There are only limited benchmarks out right now I think, but from what I have read, AMD is the better value, offering more performance per dollar.

AMD would be a better investment I think. It doesnt make business sense spending twice as much for a small improvement in some applications.

Wait 3 days for reviews, benchmarks, and analysis. Seriously.

The peanut gallery (us) do not have any verified information to base a purchasing decision on.

The only ones who should be wanting a I9 or threadripper are people who need all the cores and in that case Threadripper for sure but wait for benchmarks.

I9 10 core in no way can take a 16 core ryzen.

Once beyond that point one would have to look at Intel's so called 12-14-16-18 core CPU's would have to step it up to a 12 core at least to be even with Ryzen in workstation type loads.

Edit also man a person who does real work on such a weak CPU whatever you get will be night and day

But nah, I´ve gone with intel for years now, AMD is actually looking like a good choice

Going from a FX-6100 to either the 12c or 16c Threadripper is going to be a dream for you.  I'd say save the money unless you know for a fact that you have a specific need for high AVX performance or higher single-threaded performance.  You'd already be gaining a tremendous amount by just staying with AMD on this one.

Works giving me about £9k to put together a new system for our next

My current system tanks in performance after about 3 hours work so :| need the performance given the leap in quality we are going for ^-^" that why im looking at a i9 or TR

Well, if this a rig specifically for work, you need to determine if the applications that you are using can take advantage of AVX and how well.  If they do, you'd benefit nicely from a x299 build.

Hell, if it's not your money anyways, I'd be building a 7980XE rig.  You'd want to get high quality parts across the board in support of that CPU/platform, but it would kill it in the area of productivity.  You'd need a pretty high-end AIO cooler as well.  The bigger the better.

If you don't think you need it, then TR is definitely the answer.  No need in spending the extra money on stuff just because it costs more.

i will do some research on the software i use :| its not a short list ^-^"

The highest performance impacting software i have are all Render based but Dual GTX 1080 ti's will do fine for that :|

Threadripper. You dont always have to break the bank to get a really poweful system.

If your goal is primarily 3D modeling, Ryzen 7 is all you really need.

If you're doing a lot of applications at once related to gamedev, look at how Threadripper handles first.  I would say anything above the i7-7820X would be a waste on the X299 camp.  You may find it more versatile for going between game dev and modeling though.  But the i9 isn't going to really separate itself considerably from TR or i7 in alot of use cases..

Well 9k changes a lot :D Just remember its not all about the money. X299 higher core count models 16/18 will require a very high end custom loop. You have the funds to achieve this but do you have the ability to create the loop? Also will work allow it? (Warranty) Are you allowed to overclock? ( again warranty). If not then perhaps the 1950X with an AIO cooler will be the way to go, even if you do have the funds these are things to consider. I'm not trying to discourage you or swing you either way i'm just saying sometimes there is more to it than pure monetary value when its not your money.

£9k is to cover getting a New Cintiq and Display aswell so... more £5k considering how much they will set me back

Currently a TR build is gonna be around £4000 but a i9 is around £3800...

At this point in time though, Intel kinda feel like they kind of Screwed up with the X299 chips :| They feel like they where rushed :/ im kind of leaning more on TR but without decent benchmarks its kind of moot

Currently im planning on doing my build with either a
CPU: Threadripper / Intel i9
RAM: 32GB DDR4
GPU's: Dual GTX1080 ti''s
Boot/Driver/Core Software: 1tb M.2
Storage/Library: 6TB HDD

Sounds like you know what you're doing.  I don't think you'll necessarily go wrong with an i9 because you are gonna be throwing a lot of things at it (a lot of dev stuff still favors intel), and it has more PCI-E lanes.  A game dev workstation is probably the best case scenario for an i9.
