Why in the world do you need 64 gb of ram? The psu is overkill for even gtx 1080ti in SLI configuration. Also I would switch out the 6700k for a 7700k and a z270 motherboard if you are spending this much money on a pc.

First off you are in the wrong sub forum!;P

 

regarding your Build there is no Reason for a z170/6700K Go for either Z270/7700K or consider Ryzen(if you need multithreaded performance) if its just for Gaming 64GB Ram aren't needed and i would go for 16GB instead !

Yes it could be a troll or it could be one of the many people out there who assume more is better. I have seen many genuine builds along this line that didn't end up being a troll so better to try and help and have it end up being a troll than to not help and have someone make such big mistakes on their first build.

Honestly if you need 64 gb of ram most likely you are going to also need a better cpu like x99 or x299 cpus or even threadripper. I'd say ryzen but you can't really run alot of memory on ryzen without sacrificing speed.

much better build only thing i would change is the PSU this should be enough but i like to have some headroom so the PSU is more efficient and can run quieter. (would personally go for a 1000W Option)

There is no reason to get a Core i7-7700K over a 6700K. The 6700K is better because it doesn't get as hot and is officially supported on older versions of Windows.

This is a gaming rig with 2x 1080ti, it needs a 7700k at 4.9ghz, even then there will still be some bottleneck. Its a faster CPU especially for gaming

The 7700K over the 6700K is the most marginal improvement of any Intel CPU!

what use case would dictate a i7 6700k and 64 gb or ram? The only reason i could imagine a need of that much ram is work oriented tasks which would require a better cpu than a 6700k.

Solidworks, large assemblies love memory. Any parametric modeling program for serious work. First hand experience with it.

yeah I have worked with large assemblies and have never needed more than 16 gb of memory. If you are working with any sort of modeling programs that big you would likely also be doing some analysis as well and would want a more powerful cpu as well.

Large Assemblies + Simulation (EG: Thermal sim/fluids.)

I'm not sure what justifies 'large assemblies' but for my application, it's usually an entire car or a plant of some sort. OP may also like running VMs for all we know? I know I do.

Granted, something like 32Gb (or 16) would make sense for most people, there are use cases that justify the large amount of memory. Heck, maybe even a RAM disk for caching HDDs.

that is my point. if you are working with large assemblies and simulations you would want more than a quad core cpu. I have worked with full truck models on 16 gb of ram just fine so even then it seems excessive. any thermal or fluid simulations are really multi-threaded and would make use of way more cores than a quad core cpu especially with bigger models. any use case that would require that much ram would also want more cores that is just how it is. I can not think of a single situation where 64 gb of ram is justified on a z170 platform build.

in standard stock it is and i'm not saying that anyone in the their right mind should buy one if they already own a 6700k. However, this is a fresh build, so why buy dated/slower tech? Albeit it aint much in standard flavour, but I don't see any 6700k at 5.1ghz been used for GPU testing, and if this is a pure gaming rig (if it is then wtf 64gb, but can sort that later) then OP may aswell get the better chip
