I keep trying to come up with a scenario in which a Kabylake-X only board makes any sort of sense, but just can't do it...  Even making it an ITX form factor makes no sense as you can still get that on Z270 and the whole KBL-X platform will probably die with the introduction of Coffee Lake and their 6-Core i7's and hyperthreaded 4-core i3's...

Can you make up any scenario where Kabylake-X makes sense in and of itself? This entire series of CPU's and consequent motherboards just reeks of headless chicken strategy.

Watching Intel have competition is like watching a headless chicken trying to get out of a mine field

CPU: Intel I7 4790K@4.6 with NZXT X31 AIO; MOTHERBOARD: ASUS Z97 Maximus VII Ranger; RAM: 8 GB Kingston HyperX 1600 DDR3; GFX: ASUS R9 290 4GB; CASE: Lian Li v700wx; STORAGE: Corsair Force 3 120GB SSD; Samsung 850 500GB SSD; Various old Seagates; PSU: Corsair RM650; MONITOR: 2x 20" Dell IPS; KEYBOARD/MOUSE: Logitech K810/ MX Master; OS: Windows 10 Pro

Who in their right mind is going to drop money on these boards or KBX CPUs in the first place?

Who? Mouth breathers...

Most customers I meet (and by most I mean all) that are interested in this BELIEVE this is replacing the 7th gen i7.... For some reason, they think their new PC just became useless and want to sell their device for this superior technology...

Somehow Intel's marketing is working to some extent?

It makes a bit of sense since it gives you a cheaper entry point into x299 that you can upgrade from more easily. There are people who buy pentiums with the intention of upgrading to an i7, so this is basically the same idea. What Intel really should have done is lower the price on the cpu side so KBX wouldn't have such a large premium over KB.

Then there is also the money side of things. There isn't really any downside to Intel making KBX nor motherboard manufacturers making KBX specific boards. People will buy them and any company involved will make some extra money.

What. The. Fuck.

Intel said that the fact Kabylake-X series on socket 2066 is a thing is because people would get a kabylake-X cpu for their initial build and upgrade the CPU later once they can afford one and want to fully utilize every X299 feature in the future (apart from the ones they lock away behind a stupid expensive USB key we still don't know sh*t about).

That was the biggest reason of their existence. Which is now invalid because you can get motherboards without skylake-X support.

So, this raises the question AGAIN, why does kabylake-X exist?

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

We all know why Kabylake-X is stupid, and we all know that the mere existence of Kabylake-X-only boards doesn't make sense, but if I may introduce one more point...

Those motherboards are designed to only support two CPUs. There will be no more Kabylake-X CPUs (unless Intel just wants to prance around in their dunce cap), and no better feature set is supported. AM4 supports 9 CPUs so far and the lineup will expand with the 'Pro' series and later architectures, TR4 is launching with 3 CPUs and will almost certainly get more, LGA1151 supports more CPUs than I'll bother counting, and even LGA2066 has 9 announced chips, but these boards are and always will be limited to two CPUs, ones that are already considered placeholders at best.

Someone needs to get in contact with MSI and Gigabyte and ask what exactly the intention is with these boards, because that's a lot of time and money to invest in a DOA product.

"Do as I say, not as I do."

-Because you actually care if it makes sense.

For Your Information,

Intel's new X-Series ONLY supports the Z299 Chipset. If you are planning to run a X-Series i7 (or what it is your planning to run) on a Z270 Motherboard, Just forget about It or If you are trying to force It, you'll just waste 1500$ just like Linus wasted 1000$ on a Piece of $h!t HDMI Cable. Bonus tip: If you want a 8tb HDD running like an SSD, Just buy an Intel Memory Module. But please remember that the Optane Memory Module is only compatible With 200 Series Motherboards, Supposedly, The Upcoming Z299 Motherboard which supports X series Processors including the new so-called i9 series of processors.

Right because making your platform confusing for customers and manufactures is a sensible thing to do.

Except it does. Confusion is a good thing in terms of getting customers to spend more. Confusion is only bad when customers can go elsewhere, and Intel knows that a lot of customers won't go elsewhere because they don't know or don't trust the only alternative -- AMD.

Not to mention that a lot of customers buy based on price and marketing -- plenty of pre-built systems (targeted at gamers) came with HEDT CPUs even though the consumer platform was basically always the superior choice. Why? Bigger numbers = faster and marketing.

You're right. Intel, with their billions of dollars, decided to do it for no reason whatsoever.

The MSI board makes sense for an entertainment unit for individuals that don't mind throwning money around for the performance and are cool with outright replacing the entire PC later on.  Having a hard time seeing a worthwhile reason for the others that doesn't get trumped by the form-factor msi is pushing.

Even then though it only makes sense because kaby-x is actually a thing.

I could say how hilariously pointless Kaby Lake x is, but screw it!  Have a laughing skeleton instead.

Kaby Lake x was dead on arrival, and it's comfermed!  MSI and Gigabyte are a bunch of necromancers!

I'll stick with my X99 i7-5820k.

If/when I decide to upgrade, despite misgivings, I might go AMD. I have NO idea what Intel is doing anymore.

It is nice how with AMD you get a clock bump and 2x more IO for $50 more. (not counting Motherboard cost.)

But you get more value out if than any kbl-x cpu either way. I doesn't render parts of your expensive board useless and you get the same lane count from the lowest cpu to the highest one. AMD did good there just have to see how it really performs... should be around 7820x performonce like the 1800x is or better since 1900x had more memory bandwidth for  the CCX's to make use of
