Tape Storage: The Media that keeps going gets a bump in capacity

IBM and Sony have partnered together to develop a new tape cartridge that will be capable of storing 330 TB of data or ~200 Gb of data per a square inch.  For comparison, the Ars Technica article on this points out that the largest HDD are about twice the physical size of these cartridges and store 60 TB on Seagates SSD or 12 TB on HGSTs helium filled HDD, so definitely quite a bit more data density, just costs a lot more and don't expect fast read/write times out of it.  However, for long term back-up storage, this would be ideal and provides a 50% increase over what is currently available in tape storage and a 60% density increase.  As to how they accomplished such a feat:

To achieve such a dramatic increase in areal density, Sony and IBM tackled different parts of the problem: Sony developed a new type of tape that has a higher density of magnetic recording sites, and IBM Research worked on new heads and signal processing tech to actually read and extract data from those nanometre-long patches of magnetism.

Sony's new tape is underpinned by two novel technologies: an improved built-in lubricant layer, which keeps it running smoothly through the machine, and a new type of magnetic layer. Usually, a tape's magnetic layer is applied in liquid form, kind of like paint—which is one of the reasons that magnetic tape is so cheap and easy to produce in huge quantities. In this case, Sony has instead used sputter deposition, a mature technique that has been used by the semiconductor and hard drive industries for decades to lay down thin films.


The main upshot of sputtering—a cool process that you should probably read about—is that it produces magnetic tape with magnetic grains that are just a few nanometres across, rather than tens or hundreds of nanometres in the case of commercially available tape.

 

The new lubrication layer, which we don't know much about, makes sure that the tape streams out of the cartridge and through the machine extremely smoothly. Some of the biggest difficulties of tape recording and playback are managing friction and air resistance, which cause wear and tear and chaotic movements. When you're trying to read a magnetic site that is just 7nm across, with the tape whizzing by at almost 10 metres per second, even the smallest of movements can be massively problematic.

 

We know a little more about IBM's new read head, which appears to be a 48nm-wide tunnelling magneto-resistive head that would usually be found in a hard disk drive—which makes sense, given the tape's sputtered medium is very similar to the surface of a hard drive platter. This new head, combined with new servo tech that precisely controls the flow of tape through the system, allows for a positional accuracy of under 7nm. A new signal processing algorithm helps the system make sense of the tiny magnetic fields that are being read by the head.

Of course, cost, as always will be a significant factor, however, large data centers that have to backup lots of data will definitely be looking into this for the benefits of storage capacity and density.

You find me another way to fit 330TB on something no bigger than a regular 3.5" HDD.

Tape drives, great for storage until you need to access any amount of data that isn't stored perfectly linearly and or want to do it with any speed

It wouldn't really be a petabyte though. It'd be 990 TB. You'd need 4 drives in order to get a full petabyte.

A backup would interesting, but for LTT, where I imagine the main use of the backup would be to restore the entire servers extremely quickly (Like within a day), tape drives would probably be wayyyy too slow.

but if you consider that clickbait, the same goes for every hard drive a manufacturer has ever sold as 1tb or 2tb or whatever. My hard drive is only 930gb. :P

Wrong. Your HDD's formatted capacity is 930GiB. It's raw capacity is 1,000GB.

Note that lil 'i?' That denotes that we're working with 1024, not 1000.

This bit if confusion has gotten worse since Windows stopped actually USING the MiB, GiB, TiB abbreviations and dropped the 'i' while keeping the same meaning. :/

Hard drives manufacturers tell their capacity measurements on a deximal scale, but Windows uses a binary  scale to measure the capacity of the drives, so it looks a bit lower on the OS. 1TB = 1,073,741,824 (2^30) bytes in binary, and a decimal TB = 1,000,000,000 (10^9) bytes.

IDK for sure, but I imagine Linus would say something along the lines of 

"We've considered it, but in the event of a catastrophic failure, it would not be quick enough to get rolling right away."

Granted, it could be a great last resort, but I also don't know how many thousands these drives cost, so I can't say for sure.

After formatting, you're still close to 1000GB, but that's gigabytes, not gibibyte.
