Let me know when any of those new features actually mean anything to the average user. Because so far:

  • It took a few years for SATA 6Gbps to be useful, and even I'd argue it's really not considering I haven't seen any storage device saturate SATA 3Gbps for loading performance
  • NVMe isn't worth it. (M.2 itself though is great)
  • USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1 only sees a benefit with external drives
  • USB 3.1 Gen 2 has no real benefit for the average consumer
  • Thunderbolt is a high-end interface (i.e, you have to actively look for it and it's usually only on higher end systems) and at the moment only gets noticed when someone wants to do an eGPU on their laptop

I mean, sure, maybe these interfaces will finally have their payday, but by the time they do, they're pretty much going to be ubiquitous.

Q.Q I use Optane! 32GB Optane Module paired with a Western Digital Black 2TB drive (using bcache rather than RST, since I'm on Linux).

Just going to point this out that AM4 is the AMD socket as far as I recall and not the name of the chipset on the board...  While I think AMD has promised to support all their processors across this socket thru 2020, I don't think that precludes them from releasing new chipsets as well...

Though that doesn't mean current Ryzen CPUs won't fit into those new chipsets ;) Especially when you consider what we've seen in the past from AMD and their previous sockets/chipsets.

Not really.  The end user in the majority of situations is buying a prebuilt.   iGPU, FIVR, and more features on the chipset means a cheaper system because it's lower cost to manufacture.  Consumer wins.

The big bummer about Coffee Lake not working on Z170/Z270 is the inability to get a newer, better performing processor without tossing the mobo. People looking to reuse old LGA1151 mobos are already prepared to lose out on features exclusive to newer chipsets. Could Intel really not make Coffee Lake work on older mobos? Or are you just going to sweep it under the 'arbitrary new requirements' rug? Whatever lame ass reasons Intel cooks up to say a new mobo or processor is required for 4K Netflix. Surely you're not dumb enough to fall for that?

 

Cost savings to OEMs mean jack shit for the people most heavily impacted by this - people looking to make their own CPU upgrades and not have to spend extra on a new mobo.

You know that 4k Netflix thing isn't Intel's fault, it's whoever is responsible for the DRM, and HDCP2.2

Like what? I don't give about features I don't use else I would've gotten x370. Oh wow it has an extra USB port lets buy it. 4 years isn't enough to outdate something right now, I mean there's a reason people aren't upgrading their 2600ks and the like. 99 percent of people upgrade for the processor, not an insignificant feature or two.

We'll see eventually the repercussions for AMD being stuck on the same socket for 4 years.  Maybe no new features, no higher core counts, no faster DDR4.  Who knows.

Support through 2020 just means the Zen2 refresh/improvement. Zen3 isn't assured. Also, aside from some new USB 3.x upgrades, there's not a lot in the pipeline that's actually of use on the desktop side. PCIe 4.0 may not see the Desktop market at any point and be a server-only feature. (And AMD will be updating the Server CPUs more quickly.)

 

The real issue with Intel is that the z270 boards + Kaby Lake launched in late December, and that entire product stack is now dead.

Kaby Lake was compatible with Z170 though.  Repeat of Z87+Z97 and Z68+Z77.

 

There is always going to be a board at "the end of the line" :)
