I agree 87% with them. The area in which RED's excel are movie sets. They have incredible low light performance, you can color grade them for days, they don't have visual anomalies, and the list goes on and on. I can see Linus simply wants the best for him and the viewers but having a RED camera for Youtube is silly. The first being the whole res idea but the second is compression. Take a beautiful video and compress the hell out of it and people's internets are going to only support 480p or 720p and they don't think twice. Maybe with the floatplane club we can get some incredible looking footage without youtube's compression.

Just keeping this here as a Yeah I really enjoyed Linus' rant. It was just good fun. I also agree with most of what Corridor said, though I still don't think anything you say will justify a $240 cable... Really I'd just like to see them talk to each other and see what results from it. Both LTT and Corridor are some of my longest running Youtube subs.

I mean we could say if you're getting a gaming rig and you're going to be spending practically any time you play games on it streaming at the same time, why bother settling for anything above a $200 video card? Your viewers aren't going to see anything past 60FPS (if that) and the quality is going to be shot to hell anyway.

Most of their other content (paid-for advertisements, training vids, etc) either end up on YouTube (Eg: on the Samsung channel), or are distributed for internal use by employees and don't generally require "Better than YouTube" quality anyway.

Ultimately the point is if they think this equipment gets them the results they want, then what's it matter to anyone else?

 

If anyone follows LTT's setup blindly, then they're novices who don't understand the art of what they're trying to copy. Like people who blindly follow a PC build without taking a few moments to figure out if this is what they really want and meets their needs.

 

Or on this website I frequent, people who copy HTML code, fill in some blanks, and then have the gall to say "I'm a coder!"

However we are talking about a rather large youtube channel about tech so yeah, you kinda need to be on that level.

 

My second reason is probably closer to Linus' own reasons for: He is investing in his business as a production company not just a youtube channel. LMG has done far more than just "youtube videos" with ads for other companies and such. And if you're gonna sell big boy production company you kinda do need big boy production equipment to do so. I hate to use the term "industry standard" but I really do think it applies: Linus now has the equipment, the crew, the contacts and the know-how to basically close down his youtube business and become a full time production company for anything from ads to lower end tv and movie production. 

 

So let's say youtube completely crashes and revenue dries up: he already can just offer services to produce ads and has the quality for rather good results at a competitive professional level. Not saying he would start winning oscars for production or anything but he could easily step up to professional production.

Seeing how well some of the paid shorts are like the camping one with the LG phone and the func one. If there was a shorts or skit side to LMG I would enjoy that a lot.

I could have done without the mask stuff stitched in but really good video overall. It can basically be summarized as "You're making YouTube videos and you bought a camera meant for video shoots that costs millions upon millions of dollars. You're not the intended audience".

Side note: I am looking at their $50 Camera vs $50,000 Camera video and it is like a breath of fresh air to see actual informative content on YouTube. Thanks for showing me this channel.

 

 

Anyway, I think this brings up an issue I have been worried about ever since Linus started saying he cared more about making money than to make things he is proud of (not his exact words obviously). If he thinks (and might be correct) that he will get more views by posting these rant-type videos, even if he needs to pretend to be ignorant about the product then I could see him doing it. That's just being dishonest and feeding his viewers with false assumptions and information. It really puts his credibility into question.

 

Please keep in mind that I have not watched the original video (or any videos outside of the WANk show for a long time) so I am basing that on a fairly limited exposure to his recent videos, and his behavior in the past. Things might be different though. Maybe he made it clear that he was just being sarcastic, or pretending to be ignorant.

I don't think the rant was insincere: From a tech stand point it is fairly accurate: You really don't need to charge 900 bucks or whatever for a cable. He just doesn't makes the point that the top notch sensor on the camera makes it worthwhile to pay so much for the price of admission and obviously defers to his staff for the purchasing decision but not without well, being salty about the bill in the immediate short term: people are capable of stepping outside of a business mind and saying "why the hell am I paying 900 for a fucking cable!" without meaning he'll return it or decide against it in the future if another upgrade is needed.
