Coffee Lake Clockspeeds Leaked

magnumkobra
Quote

We are not sure where the information was obtained from, but if it is accurate, Coffee Lake will initially consist of of the Core i5-8400, Core i5-8600K, Core i7-8700, and Core i7-8700K. There are quite a few specs and clockspeeds to cover, so let's jump right in.

Starting at the bottom, the Core i5-8400 will be a 6-core processor that does not support Hyper Threading. It will have 9MB of L3 cache and a 65W TDP. At stock settings, it will have a 2.8GHz base clock and a 3.8GHz Turbo clock on all six cores, and a 4GHz in single-core mode. If engaging two or four cores, it will be able to hit 3.9GHz via Turbo.

The Core i5-8600K is also a 6-core/6-thread processor with 9MB of L3 cache, but with a higher 95W TDP and an unlocked multiplier to make overclocking easier. Clockspeeds are higher too, with a 3.6GHz base and 4.1GHz Turbo on all cores, and a 4.3GHz Turbo speed in single-core mode. If engaging two or four cores, it can hit 4.2GHz via Turbo.

Moving onto the Core i7 processors, the Core i7-8700 is a 6-core/12-thread chip, meaning it supports HyperThreading. L3 cache is bumped up to 12MB, with the TDP rated at 65W. According to the leaked specs, it will have a 3.2GHz base clock and 4.3GHz Turbo clock on all cores, and a 4.6GHz single-core Turbo speed. Four cores will be able to hit a Turbo of 4.3GHz as well, while the Turbo clock for engaging two cores tops out at 4.5GHz.

Finally, the Core i7-8700K is an unlocked 6-core/12-thread chip with 12MB of L3 cache and a 95W TDP. It is the fastest of the bunch with a 3.7GHz base clock, 4.3GHz Turbo clock on all six cores, and a 4.7GHz Turbo clock in single-core mode. When activating two cores, it can hit 4.6GHz, while the Turbo clock for four cores is 4.4GHz.

http://www.pcgamer.com/amp/intels-core-i5-and-core-i7-coffee-lake-cpus-hit-the-turbo-button-for-fast-clocks/

It seems Intel is preparing its line-up to take on the new Ryzen processors. Hopefully this means lower prices on both sides. Its nice to see Intel finally bring the 6 core to the mainstream and the rumored clocks don't seem too bad.

yah thats exactly what i was thinking and wanting. a G4560 with an aditional core would be crazy nice IMO

well there is hope atleast. last time there was a tripple core was some really old AMD chip i think, id love to see them return and im sure Intel has a batch of half fails when they are makeing the hexa cores

I better sell my excess i3 systems before I have to pay to get them taken away... :D

6 core in i5 surprises me a bit, I thought they might have held out with quads in i5 land for longer, but this exceeds my expectations. For my compute uses which don't benefit from HT, that'll be really nice.

The 8700K will probably cost as much as the 7700K and it has 2 more cores and 4 more threads. Competition is back! :D

Hopefully. It won't be surprising if it doesn't, but will shake up Ryzen if compatibility remains as is.

I'm going to guess at a $30 price premium as was seen with the 7700K and 6700K upon release.

Yes, but they will not be backwards compatible with current 1151 boards, because they have 6 cores instead of 4.

Wouldn't make sense to keep it at a quad core for i5s if they are producing 6 cores from the i7s. This is honestly why a 3 core cpu isn't that far fetched too.

Huh, that makes no sense whatsoever. The amount of cores a cpu has doesn't affect what socket it will fit in.

If Intel are sticking to LGA1151 and not creating a new iteration then it's the same socket and will be backwards compatible. Of course they could choose to deliberately not offer backwards compatibility but imo doing that would hurt them more than it would drive sales. As a Z170A owner I wouldn't buy a new board to use a SKT1151 CPU even if it did offer more cores.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Tri-core anything doesn't make sense if i5's are going to be hexacore. 4T/4C i3s and 2C/4T Pentiums make more sense to me. Or 4C/8T i3s and 4C/4T Pentiums, but this is asking for too much.

It's because of the power delivery requirements have changed as well as improvements to Coffee Lake's DDR4 controller. Coffee Lake may not work with older LGA 1151 boards because of it.

It's incredibly stupid to keep the same socket or even the same dimensions if they kept the same pin count, but eh.

We can come back to this after Coffeelake launches, but they need to rearrange the pins to support the additional cores and DDR4-2666. Coffeelake will not be backwards compatible with current 1151 boards, unfortunately.

tl;dr

i5 8400 6c/6t 2.8ghz - turbo 3.8ghz

i5 8600k 6c/6t 3.6ghz - turbo 4.1ghz and to infinity and beyond for overclocking

i7 8700 6c/12t 3.2 ghz - turbo 4.3ghz

i7 8700k 6c/12t 3,7 ghz - turbo 4.3 ghz and to infinity and beyond for overclocking

Let me fix that for you.

i5 8600k 6c/6t 3.6ghz - turbo 4.1ghz and to 4.8 Ghz max because toothpaste.

i7 8700k 6c/12t 3,7 ghz - turbo 4.3 ghz and to 4.8 Ghz max because toothpaste.

We can come back to this after Coffeelake launches, but they need to rearrange the pins to support the additional cores and DDR4-2666. Coffeelake will not be backwards compatible with current 1151 boards, unfortunately.

Then my next build will be Ryzen, I'm not upgrading from SKT1151 to SKT1151 for 2 more cores. Heck I might even look at Threadripper TBH.
