Hot off the press. This is rather disappointing.

According to Entertainment Weekly, hackers have penetrated HBO's systems and posted forthcoming episodes of "Ballers" and "Room 104" online as well as a script for the as-yet-unaired episode four of "Game Of Thrones."

Hackers claimed to have stolen 1.5TB of data from the company and said that there was more material yet to come. Representatives for HBO told EW that there was a "cyber incident" which resulted in the "compromise of proprietary information." "We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cybersecurity firms," a network representative said to the magazine.

"Game of Thrones" is already among the the most pirated shows online, but the release of episodes before they air would represent a significant escalation. Earlier this year, hackers released episodes of "Orange is the New Black" ahead of that season's premiere on Netlfix.

Looks like the hacker is quite impatient and wanted to know what will happen next. But 1.5TB of company data? That could be anything other than scripts like unedited footages or even company data. So at the moment, if you'll ever stumble upon leaked episodes, don't watch it just yet and wait for the rest of us. To be honest, I'm not really a big fan of the show until last year after excessive persuasion from a friend.

I'm wondering now what are the rules set within HBO's firewall that a data breach happened. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't think so. No one knows if the ones compromised are unreleased episodes or scripts.

Yeah, the next episode is called The Spoils of War. Ah well. No point in watching them out of sequence.

What kind of access? Can she watch unreleased episodes & scripts? Do you think the breach is somehow an inside job?

I remember her copying some movies off of their servers weeks before release date. Don't know specifics though.

As for the inside job, it's not unheard of. And 1.5TB is a helluva lot of data to go unnoticed.

Shouldn't their IT be using packet sniffers or other tools to determine how much data is passing through a network port or at least within HBO's own local network?

1.5 TB of leaked data could be episodes 4 to 7 and/or confidential employee data.

Depends on the quality, I suppose, but I don't see 3-4 episodes being that large even at 4k. (then again, depending on what format/quality they're using, it could be raw cuts)

1.5TB could also be a few episodes, scripts and a helluva lot of garbage.

Agree, I still remember when Amazing spider-man 2 was just released, and being on a game discussion board, this little shit was saying about seeing it, and then went on to say "yeah I was suprised when gwen was killed"... I went off big time for that, I was really pissed off.

No need for spoilers, even if you didnt read all the books. ( the directors do their own thing with kinda big differences to the books )

The author is good at one thing, "valar morghulis".... "everyone dies" so its just a matter of time :P

The responsible IT that didnt recognize data transfers of that volume... wow...  even if its stolen over a longer period, someone should see it

Well, I would be happy if mods will delete posts containing spoilers especially spoilers from the purported leaks. What happens next is that someone at HBO will be losing their jobs for crappy firewall rules.

can i just say.. this is a pretty sad level of digital security if someone can pull 1.5TB before anyone notices and pulls the plug..

I work in a visual effects office.  Our 30gbit connection could fire off 1.5TB of Data in 7mins.  That's less than a coffee break.

I'm not commenting on the connection speed of the servers in the HBO leak in particular, but you say it's 'sad' only because you don't appreciate the kinds of connections seen in the film industry to move data between facilities.

It's almost certainly not raw footage.  Raw footage is huge.  1.5TB of 'raw footage' would be an insignificant amount.  If they got any video data it was probably what we typically call 'reels' which are usually quicktime renders of lengths of films or episodes that are HEAVILY watermarked and in various states of completion.

I get hat a lot of you think 1.5TB is a lot of of data, but I once worked on a 10 second shot from a recent film and it had 4TB in assets.  ...That was after it was simplified by the original VFX vendor.  This is a 'top end' example of how heavy it can be, but I'm just saying, you guys think 1.5TB is a lot but it necessarily isn't.

The TV has long surpassed what was written in the books so far... I have almost given up on ever reading them now, he really needs to pull his finger out of his ass and get on with the books now. I know that the TV will deviate from the books, and already has... but there will still be major plot happenings that will be very similar.

i'd also expect those connections between facilities arent publicly accessible, i've physically touched a 40-gigabit connection between two facilities of this nature, if you're talking sensitive data, and if you're talking 40 gigabit, that shit's all point to point.
