Nvidia Claims 3X Improved Performance In Certain Applications With New Driver Update for Titan Xp (Vega Response?)

Nvidia is claiming a 3X performance increase in certain professional applications with their new driver update. Perhaps Nvidia is scared by Vega and this is their response for professional users because the timing seems a bit coincidental don't you think?

They're just scared they don't want to become past AMD

So they’ve been able to do this all along, but would rather have their Titan X owners be grumpy that the 1080 Ti passed them, than release new drivers to up the performance? Or is this only for the Titan Xp, not normal, everyday Titan XPs?

This is only for the actual Titan Xp, not the Titan X (pascal). And it's not in games, only certain professional applications.

Like what others are saying, it's for professional applications like Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Mudbox, AutoCAD, Pixologic ZBrush, SolidWorks CAD, Cinema 4D, not for gaming (even though that's entirely possible). The Nvidia Titan Xp is really marketed towards prosumers who need the 12GB of GDDR5X memory, the 3,840 CUDA cores, and all of the other lucrative stuff that the Titan Xp brings to the table that the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti doesn't, but can't easily afford a Quadro (although all that brings is double the VRAM with ECC support, and actually certified drivers for professional software, along with incredible reliability and a eye-watering price tag to boot, but with corporations like Blizzard, they could care less because they have tons of cash for developing new games).

 

To answer your second question, this new driver is for the Nvidia Titan Xp, not their previous Nvidia Titan X that preceded the new 2017 one. Please refer to the first line in my signature!

 

So unless you are doing professional stuff on a daily basis (Freelance, studio, or otherwise), and you're using the software I listed out, and you want an uber-powerful GPU, then look at the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti instead.

i wonder what they changed, i must test this myself too. Since i am getting the vega fe, i will run numerical benchmarks to see what did nvidia unlock to get more performance in maya. Have they been nerfing application performance? If so that is very very disgusting of nvidia. If its a hardware unlock (like full fp16 performance), that would be interesting seeing as AMD consumer cards have full fp16 performance while the geforce and titans have it nerfed like their fp64.

 

I still do plan to write how nvidia titan is not worth it even with L2 cache that the geforce doesnt have when all AMD consumer GPUs have the L2 cache there even if slower than nvidia, full duplex busses (you will see nvidia consumer GPUs struggle when used externally due to half duplex bus as to nerf compute performance), i wonder if this was changed too.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I recall when AMD was pushing their Mantle API, NVIDIA responded by announcing their next driver would bring "up to double performance" in games, and it turned out to be 1-5% increase in a handful of games plus one game which got double performance in SLI, because... SLI wasn't working before, and the driver fixed it. So double performance in that game. Woooooh...

 

Seems like they might actually be worried about Vega if they're trying to kill hype with that old trick again.

Makes sense. AMD has been "marketing" it in a way that makes VEGA seem like shit, and now, it's looking like VEGA isn't really all that shit, but rather a very viable counter to Pascal.

Titan has been pretty bad since the 980 ti, good to see Nvidia is making the Titan great again if only because of pressure from AMD

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

this looks more like the usually marketing tripe (exaggerate everything an promise world domination)  than being worried.

Technically Nvidia doesn't have to release anything for a whole year.... since everything is still within price/performance they can technically still milk everything out of pascal for a whole another year and people will have to accept that if they are still going for the fastest

I still do plan to write how nvidia titan is not worth it even with L2 cache that the geforce doesnt have when all AMD consumer GPUs have the L2 cache there even if slower than nvidia, full duplex busses (you will see nvidia consumer GPUs struggle when used externally due to half duplex bus as to nerf compute performance), i wonder if this was changed too.

Maybe I am misinterpreting you, but it sounds like you've already made your mind up on what you're going to write in your review, before you even have the cards so you can test them. Having predefined conclusions is a very bad thing to have. It will inevitably lead to unconscious bias (because you want to verify that you're correct, instead of looking at evidence and then make your mind up).

As soon as they saw that AMD had their head screwed on straight again with Ryzen and how Intel got suckerpunched nVidia started to move. That's why that MCM whitepaper with MIT came out recently. They do not want to play the part of Intel. As it is, assuming Navi is a success in its MCM implementation similar to Ryzen then you should see AMD able to saturate the GPU markets from low to high end with little resistance. IPC is a much lesser concern on GPUs. nVidia has started to move now so they're not left out in the cold for 3+ years. However they have got to be pumping a shitload of money into that particular R&D program if they want a successful implementation taped out within the next 2 years.

Anyway Nvidia is not Intel.

They do keep releasing stuff and moving forward even if AMD is a bit behind.

 

Obviously AMD releasing something may make them move a bit faster and also reduce prices, but regardless they do not seem to sit on their asses.

 

I also think it may be more difficult to innovate in the x64 CPU space. Whereas in the GPU space Nvidia and AMD improve their architectures constantly...

Yup, and that means while they might be hurt by Navi they won't be left stranded. They're smart enough not to depend on market dominance.
