Is Vega worth it?

ChackoM

So I've been following the Vega announcement quite closely, would really like a Vega card. However, if I add a Vega 56 (with leaked pricing to be $399), I would have to sacrifice my ram from 16gb to 8gb. Is it worth it?

Hard to say right now. Wait for the release later today and a couple reviews thereafter. I'm optimistic though :).

I would say yes (if the card is a good price to performance), and save up to get another 8gb of ram sooner or later. I currently run 8gb and have only ever ran into an issue with it once

If you need to cut costs in order to buy Vega (I doubt whether you can, since everyone's ordering it and supply will be tight), dont buy the LED strip and SSD just yet. They arent necessary.

Damn that looks good, but honestly I think mATX boards in ATX cases look terrible. But I'll use your HDD. Thanks!

We're like what, 5 hours from launch? We'll see tonight! If I had to guess it will be exactly as worth it as Nvidia cards are. Since I've been in the PC space (2013) graphics cards perform nearly identically from a price:performance standpoint within any given price bracket. Therefore just buy whatever supports the technologies you want, and whichever one looks cooler, and whichever one performs the best in the games you play. HOWEVER we'll know all of this by thiis time tomorrow, so remain patient brother.

If you're compiling any programs on a regular basis that run over 8 GB RAM than 16, otherwise 8 is sufficient. As for Vega, it's a pretty safe bet that Vega 56 will be around 1070 level avg FPS but with significantly tighter frametimes. However the reference boards won't be out till Aug 31st on that, let alone any of the more advanced cards.

I said it was a safe bet, not a sure thing.  If you look at the frametimes for the Frontier edition over at PCPer you see that they are tighter than the 1080 at close to the same average. It's possible that RX Vega will be wildly different but I doubt it. If true however I'm tempted to do a white case build with a 1600 and Vega 56 then have my artist friend paint a stack of pancakes with a pat of butter on top on one side and the Rick and Morty butter robot on the other because that thing will as be as smooth as silk.
