what projects have you guys been doing

I know that is the regular way of doing things, but for delta printers, I think this becomes a little more difficult since marlin is primarily for Cartesian style printers.

Well I sure would but the problem is I watched about 50 videos on it, youtube it you'll get a ton of hits as it seems to be very popular as purpose built systems seem to only produce 5 amps max unless your spending the big money, with this home built it can produce 3 times that and it's an easy build cost around $10 if you already have a PSU

The problem is that it's a switching power supply, so that will cause voltage ripple (in the range of 100mV) so if you get an oscilloscope and measure the 3.3v output by taking a 1s snapshot of the output, you'll see the actual voltage of 3.3v but a huge amount of fluctuations, you could have as little as 3.25v and as much as a 3.35v.

Also, you could also have extremely small spikes where your power supply may output 3.5v or 3.1v for a millisecond or so.

Those fluctuations depend on the switching speed of the power supply (usually at around 60-100kHz for decent power supplies, 30-50 kHz for old cheap designs)

 

This voltage with lots of fluctuations is bad for some projects, and can influence how some projects work (for example microcontrollers with wireless modules, operation amplifiers could have low quality when fed from switching power supplies)

 

The primary side of some power supplies is often tied to the secondary side of power supplies through some Y class capacitors, which are small enough to not cause more damage than maybe a spark if you touch connectors (less than 1-2mA at 250v).. they're there to reduce EMI and other radiation by discharging it into the mains, but that charge can also damage various things you have connected to them. So if you're not careful, some day you may be surprised your chip is dead all of the sudden.

 

The commercial linear power supplies you see which are limited to 3-5A output use separate classic/toroidal transformer windings for each output and use linear voltage control using pass transistors which means the output voltage is very smooth, it's quite normal to see less that 5mV ripple on the output voltage set.

 

Also since the outputs are insulated from each other, it's possible to connect the outputs in series or in parallel to get more current or more voltage (as desired), which is harder to do with switching power supplies (you can't connect the 5v to the gnd of the 12v to get a 17v output between gnd of 5v and 12v terminal, you'd just short the power supply)

 

Anyway... the power supply is a good idea, lots of people have done.  Good to power some simple microcontroller projects, some led strips, various things... but it would still be great investment to buy an adjustable linear power supply which will also allow you to limit the output current as desired and which will have the outputs 100% insulated from mains and with minimal "noise" for your projects.

HaHa like this one? I have both I don't use the PSU for circuits to often mostly for side power if you will I like to power things off board when applicable such as 5 volt relays I have read what you have described and by the very informative nice job!

Been messing around with some rtl-sdr dongles recently. Looking at transmissions from my cars key fob. OOK modulation makes it really easy to see bits being transmitted.

I got my field charging battery working properly as a 4s14p pack! Just need to finish wiring the balance lead, and then it's all done!

Halfway through construction, will do a full build log once its complete. Spending lots of time with the Router power tools, next up spending lots of time with the Soldering Iron making the custom cables needed.

Yeah a lot of people do that in my local fpv group, but have you ever tried carrying a car battery? Or throwing one in a backpack? My point exactly ;)

Fuses would have been a good idea, but I'm only going to be discharging the pack at like 0.3c at most. Although I might wire in some of the ones that were on the discharge leads of the pack @CUDA_Cores sent me.

This damn xps 8300. Although I think it should be repaired, I can handle a project and my grandparents want something 100% reliable. I think I'm going to try to get them to upgrade, buy a new motherboard for this pos and hope for the best! Maybe put in a new psu and 780/ti and flip it for some profit

Here is a prototype of my 5 channel LED driver controller by a Raspberry Pi. Sorry, I know the wiring is a mess.

The mosfets I used are the FQP30N06L driven by a TC427. The LEDs are there just for testing. This can run 12v strips or 24v strips as long as you wire a matching power supply. 

 

Still need a DC-DC buck converter so I can power my Raspberry Pi from the same power supply. I guess I just get one of these:
