100% Coffee Lake will not support Z270 motherboards.  There is power delivery and DDR4 changes with Coffee Lake that make it incompatible even though it's the same total number of pins.  You'll have to buy a Z370 board during launch or wait until next year for Z390 (which isn't really going to add much over Z370)

Workstation:  13700k @ 5.5Ghz || Gigabyte Z790 Ultra || MSI Gaming Trio 4090 Shunt || TeamGroup DDR5-7800 @ 7000 || Corsair AX1500i@240V || whole-house loop.

z370 is coming with Coffee Lake, however we don't know if it's backwards compatible. We've heard both ways. (Maybe lower SKUs are?)

Nobody knows yet aside from Intel. I would hope that they make CFL available for the current chipsets after a BIOS update.

The X299 will not support the Coffee Lake processor? I assume because it's the micro-architecture and the nano-meter differences.

The current run of leaks show that whatever Coffee Lake was being tested ran on a 270 board.

Plus it would be pretty dumb to release this on the same exact socket.

Doubt it, Intel hasn't really done that with any new launch from what I can remember. Admittedly my memory is pretty bad. Also... Intel really likes money. (Also bribing other companies into not buying competitors products is a thing Intel likes).

I'm one of the few people I know that tend to repair electronics with a smith's hammer on a regular basis.

They normally use the "tick-tock" approach. So probably/hopefully not.

Okay let's see and wait what will happen. For me i7-8700k looks pretty tasty CPU but if it will not support current motherboards it will be kinda sad because of expensive upgrade.

They don't do that anymore. It goes process-arch-optimise now.

Considering its release date as well as the complete lack of information surrounding Coffee Lake, no one knows anything other than it'll be on 1151.

When Intel stopped caring.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

Hypnotoad's RAM is dying, his motherboard is acting like the 6-year-old AsRock it is, a couple of SATA ports have just stopped working, but the RGB remains. The RGB always remains. Hypnotoad lives. All glory to the Hypnotoad.

Yet, that's what they are doing.  If you want Coffee Lake, you're going to need a new z370 or higher board to do it.
