Why does my monitor lock at 60 fps?

MValuableP

Hi everyone, I have an issue.

So for a long time I've been dealing with this issue.

Basically, I have a two monitor setup; 1x60Hz monitor, 1x144Hz monitor.

What I usually do on my pc is watch streams or youtube on the 60Hz monitor while gaming on my 144Hz, BUT whenever I watch any type of video format on my 60Hz monitor, my game locks at 60fps too, because it somehow can't differentiate the two different video frame rates, so it just locks at 60fps because both monitors are able to output that simultaneously.

What is the deal, tech gods?

Extra info:

60Hz monitor is connected via HDMI, 144Hz is connected via DisplayPort.

Thanks for you time and possibly help,

MVP

There might be a setting that caps frames.

It's called "Sync Every Frame". It locks it because you won't see a difference in 60FPS and 144FPS unless you have a 144Hz Monitor. If you want a higher refresh rate consider "Overclocking" the refresh rate of your monitor.

And it removes "Screen tearing effect". This happens if you have a higher Frames Per Second than your monitor's refresh rate.

There's your problem. Windows treats your entire Desktop as a single monitor. Because you have a 60Hz and 144Hz, it's only going to run at the lowest common denominator. In order to run things above 60Hz / FPS on your 144Hz monitor, try running things in actual Fullscreen mode. I know this isn't ideal, since you'll have to ALT-TAB or WIN-TAB to move the mouse to the other Window, but that's how Windows works.

Still weird that I can be on this website and still play with 144Hz, but if I go on twitch, it caps. I'll try fullscreen, though, thanks for the tip!

I'm going to guess that it's something to do with the way Windows and GPU drivers handle video playback, but I'm no expert. Maybe someone else can chime in.

The tip worked, so thanks for your help! Now I just have to learn to deal with fullscreen (puke)
