Haven't had flash installed on my main computers since Windows 10. So I've been doing fine without Flash for about 2 years already.

 

Guess I'll have to set a reminder to download a copy just before the support ends. Because as soon as they remove the download I will probably run into some old thing that relies on it...

I've not had flash on any of my systems since I installed my SSD onto my old laptop I think 4 years ago. I reinstalled the OS and didn't feel the need to install Flash. Hadn't missed it since.

Don't worry, the massive amount of JavaScripts websites use today have made sure that pages will be slow and full of security holes even if Flash disappears.

If you're serious about that, I found a page on the Adobe site that still lets you download the full offline installers for Flash player.

Scroll down to "Still having problems?" and use the download links.  They should get the most current version of Flash for each type: ActiveX (only need for Win7 and under), NPAPI and PPAPI.

"Good" riddance to flash, I say.  When a simple game like FarmVille (or other flash games) chokes on a system with an i7-4790K, 32GB RAM and a GTX 1060 (3GB, but still...), getting 0.1 - 8 fps or so, something's wrong.

 

How do SuperPosition, FireStrike, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Witcher 3, etc, get better performance AND look better than flash, on the same hardware?? ?

 

How would those flash apps/sites need to be rewritten to be more efficient than game engines, like Source, for example?  I'd even venture to guess that Quake 1 or Half-Life 1 or maybe MineCraft (with HD mods) could be more visually complex than some flash games.

Its been on life support for sooooooooooo long. I thought this day would never come. I remember using Ubuntu back in the day. Had to use No script to block flash content, because it would crash the friggen browser every two seconds. So happy its dieing in the fire like it should.

Actually, Flash uses the CPU to draw. It can hardware accelerate certain things, but mostly CPU that draws. And Flash is 100% vector based, not raster.

So not only the CPU SUCKS at drawing... I mean this is why we have GPUs, but VECTORS, something GPUs excel at but CPU struggles.

 

Now, you might be wondering why Flash doesn't use the GPU since day 1? Well back in early 2000,  most systems only has a graphic solution to output visuals and barely play SD video. And even "gaming" GPUs back then sucked at doing many things... recall in 2006 when Vista was released, unless you had a med range gaming GPU, or the latest and greatest last gen GPU, Vista experience was sluggish in terms of moving windows around, because most GPUs of the time, sucked at doing alpha blending (transparency).

 

You can help boost performance of your Flash games by right-click on the flash game, and assuming the dev didn't block it (or if they did, see if it is in the options of the game), and set Quality to: Low. This will disable the CPU from doing alpha blending calculations, so everything will be pixelated, with aliasing everywhere, but it should help.

I'm not glad because on YouTube I hate videos in 60fps especially videos that have no reason to be in 60fps, so I use a plug-in to force flash and thus enabling 30fps for options higher than 480.

Just use this site to find all the versions of the video, copy the desired url, open VLC player, media -> open network stream, paste the url, play.  

 

This works up to 720p, beyond that youtube stores audio and video separately so you'll have to do this:  

copy the desired video and audio urls, open VLC player, media -> open network stream, paste the video url, show more options, play another media synchronously, paste the audio url, hit play.

 

 

EDIT:Just wanted to note that the MP4 stream takes longer to load than the webm stream.

I often forget that VLC can play video streams.  I've done it in the past, but I don't do it often enough for it to stick in my mind.

Yeah, VLC is awesome; other players still do stuff better at times but VLC is more of a no nonsense one-stop shop than anything I've seen thus far.

 

EDIT: I forgot to mention that my solution only works with up to 720p files, beyond that youtube stores audio and video separately; I also listed a secondary solution which uses VLC's ability to play two files synchronously to overcome that.  

I realize you probably won't use it but since you were vaguely interested I figured I include this  .
